Publisher's summary

"Just once I'd like to fly into a system where everyone doesn't want to kill us."

Tanis Richards has spent half her life on the Intrepid, guiding the great colony ship, and its two million passengers, across hundreds of light-years. She has risked life, limb, and those dearest to her to get this far.

Now she's within reach of her goal; the New Canaan System, and a normal, stable life. The kind she's only dreamed about. The only remaining hurdle is to strike a deal with the Transcend Alliance and trade the Intrepid's advanced technology for the star system.

If only things were so easy. The Intrepid's arrival has upset the delicate balance of power between the Transcend, the Orion Guard, and the Inner Stars.

Everything Tanis has ever hoped for is at risk as she fights to build the colony of New Canaan amidst the looming specter of war.

Didn’t see that coming…

I love this universe and its characters! Especially the Richards! I love that family and having the kids growing into adulthood and sticking with their parents to a point. I was concerned they would just be left behind somewhere “safe.” Thank you, Cooper, for that! I love series that are led by a growing family!

The book had so many bomb drops. With the next book being a complete explosion of pure epic bossomness! But that will be in the next review. I was too impatient and kept going with these. Especially since they won’t be a part of premium after May 7th…

And I don’t want to give too many spoilers in this. Especially with this being at the beginning of the series still. I’ll just say that I highly recommend it!

The new narrator took me a couple moments to get used to after the change from the Intrepid Saga and the first book of the new series. But I still enjoy her as well. She does a great job with all the characters that keep getting added to this expanding universe.

Glad i found this

I just recently finished the 'Intrepid saga box set' which included the first book of this series at the end as a continuation of that story. The ending of that book left me hangin off a cliff and for a whole minute i couldnt find anymore books in the Intrepid series and had a mini freak out. After taking a closer look at the box set i realized what the problem was and found this delightful little series and started buying up the books. This one held true to the rest and was full of wonderful characters, intriguing problems, perfect pacing and progression, tons of well written action sequences and all the moving parts came together very nicely. When a story contains an entire galaxy and all the governments and peoples and worlds that come with it theres going to be alot of different things happening all over the place and itd be easy for that to get a little overwhelming or confusing but the way this book is put together it doesn't seem too big at all. There are points where a decade or more will have passed but the transition from one time to another is seamless because of how involved we are with the characters and the inner dialog of the characters always catches us up in a subtle and informative way. Im so glad i found these books. Tanis is my hero. Id honestly be happy if this were less of a military space opera and more of a romance, base building, colony focused series. I just love the characters so much that i could listen to entire books of them just trying to set things up and get things going in their little corner of the galaxy. Of course that wouldnt fit alot of their personalities and it might mess up the dynamics of the plot so im happy with the way things are. The author does a really good job balancing things between character development and conflict as it is so i really am not complaining 😊

Why did you change the narrator?

Good story but a bit stretched out compared to previous books in the series. I Prefer the original narrator to this one.
