About this listen

Instant #1 New York Times bestseller!

Internationally bestselling superstar author Angie Thomas makes her middle grade debut with the launch of an inventive, hilarious, and suspenseful new contemporary fantasy trilogy inspired by African American history and folklore.

It’s not easy being a Remarkable in the Unremarkable world. Some things are cool—like getting a pet hellhound for your twelfth birthday. Others, not so much—like not being trusted to learn magic because you might use it to take revenge on an annoying neighbor.

All Nic Blake wants is to be a powerful Manifestor like her dad. But before she has a chance to convince him to teach her the gift, a series of shocking revelations and terrifying events launch Nic and two friends on a hunt for a powerful magic tool she’s never heard of...to save her father from imprisonment for a crime she refuses to believe he committed.

Making magic corrupt is an amazing idea and the idea of the main character be profited to become the main villain is what I’ve been waiting to see happen!

I didn’t get a chance to write my review of this gem last year. It was one of the last books that I read. Yes, I know I’m late and yes, I’ve had it for some time. But anyhoo.

🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️Angie Thomas LOVES Jackson!!! Angie Thomas LOVES Jackson. Let me say it one more time, Angie Thomas LOVES Jackson!!! The hidden gems about the City made my heart smile.

Now to the story behind Nic. There was a reason that she and her father trecked from city to city. The secrets that finally caught up with them caused her to dig deep into who she is to right a wrong caused by grown folks. Yep grown folks. You know we get it wrong sometimes and we place our insecurities on our children. Not realizing the damage it could cause them. Nic was brave and courageous. All she needed was inside of her. The power was inside of her.

This was an adventurous story of self- discovery, secret, pain, love, growth and belief in one’s self. I can definitely see it as a series on a Saturday morning.

When life comes at you know that you have all you need inside of you!
