Publisher's summary
In Woolrich's iconic tale, Detective Tom Shawn saves a lovely young woman from a suicide attempt one night, and later hears her story. She is in despair because the death of her wealthy father has been predicted by a confidence man seemingly gifted with the power of clairvoyance; a man whose predictions have unerringly aided her father in his business many times before. Shawn and a squad of detectives investigate this dire prediction and try to avert the millionaire businessman from meeting his ordained end at the stroke of midnight. One of Cornell Woolrich's most influential novels, this classic noir tale of a man struggling with his ability to see the future is arguably the author's best in its depiction of a doomed vision of predestination.

Story
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

The fiction world of today needs a “Saint” more than it ever did. For years now that scene has been dominated by the “anti-heroes"—those grim gray operators in a sunless sub-culture where global issues are worked out with totally unemotional pragmatism, those hapless uninspired puppets manipulated and expended by ruthlessly dedicated little brothers of Big Brother. It made morbidly fascinating narrative, but it never gave anyone a lift until it climaxed in the hyper-gadgeted parodies of 007 extravaganzas.

The neighbors all whisper about the two sisters who live on the hill: It's Blanche Hudson who lives in that house, you know. The Blanche Hudson, who starred in big Hollywood films all those years ago. Such a shame her career ended so early, all because of that accident. They say it was her sister, Jane, who did it - that she crashed the car because she was drunk. They say that's why she looks after Blanche now, because of the guilt. That's what they say, at least.

Story
In this genre-bending novel, among the first to have launched sci fi into literature, a group of remarkable social outcasts band together for survival and discover that their combined powers render them superhuman. Together, they may represent the next step in evolution - or the final chapter in the history of the human race. As they struggle to find whether they are meant to help humanity or destroy it, Sturgeon explores questions of power and morality, individuality and belonging.

Paul Madvig was a cheerfully corrupt ward-heeler who aspired to something better: the daughter of Senator Ralph Bancroft Henry, the heiress to a dynasty of political purebreds. Did he want her badly enough to commit murder? And if Madvig was innocent, which of his dozens of enemies was doing an awfully good job of framing him? Dashiell Hammett’s tour de force of detective fiction combines an airtight plot, authentically venal characters, and writing of telegraphic crispness. A one-time detective and a master of deft understatement, Hammett invented the noir crime novel.

If you've never read a Repairman Jack novel, this is the place to begin. It's 1990. A twenty-one-year-old named Jack has dropped out of college, leaving his old life behind to build a new one in New York City. Manhattan's rough edges are jagged enough to shred any unwary newcomer, but perhaps not one who is determined to stay off the grid, at any cost, in the busiest metropolis on earth. And to do so, he'll have to take jobs of a less than legal nature.

Born into a family of modest means and respectability, Danny Fisher was gradually driven downward into the world of crime, racketeering and poverty. His bitterness, his homesickness over the loss of the house in Brooklyn that was given to him for his eighth birthday, and his feud with his harsh father, pulled him one way; his natural decency and his love for a sweet Italian girl, Nellie Petito, pulled him another.

When Sam Spade gets drawn into the Maltese Falcon case, we know what to expect: straight talk, hard questions, no favors, and no way for anyone to get underneath the protective shell he wears like a second skin. We know that his late partner, Miles Archer, was a son of a bitch; that Spade is sleeping with Archer's wife, Iva; that his tomboyish secretary, Effie Perine, is the only innocent in his life. What we don't know is how Spade became who he is. Spade & Archer completes the picture.

Great author but outdated novel
This is Woolrich at his most melodramatic. He excels at precise description and plots that hinge on devious mechanisms that sometimes backfire spectacularly. His short stories, including the tale on which Hitchcock's Rear Window was based, are a masterclass in suspense writing. He also deserves credit for telling some of his stories from the perspective of a woman, and his female characters are not a single type. For contrast, consider other noir writers' reliance on a very specific type: the femme fatale.
Unfortunately, The Night Has a Thousand Eyes contains many overwrought pages. Precise and fresh desciptions of the physical world and physical actions are still evident, but sometimes lose their purpose in this longer form. Perhaps this novel was written for adaptation to the screen. One of Woolrich's novels, The Blue Angel, became a huge cinematic hit in the 1940s.

This story drags on.
The performance is very good, yet the Woolrich story takes ages to get going. And the climax, inevitable by design, takes ages and ages to reach its end.

A disappointment.
Any additional comments?
I had often heard Cornell Woolrich grouped with writers of the hard-boiled school like Chester Himes and David Goodis, less famous perhaps than the Hammetts and Chandlers, but deserving of more exposure. Based on the evidence of "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes" he is not in their class. This is the first Woolrich I have exposed myself to, but I think it will probably be my last.
This is not a well-written novel.
Woolrich produced a copious amount of work in his lifetime and a very large number of his stories were adapted into well-regarded movies, often in the noir vein. I'm guessing (again going on just this novel, which, who knows, may not be as representative as I'm assuming) that the film adaptations did not strive to be terribly faithful. In this book I found his plotting inconsistent, his characters wooden, his dialogue artificial (and all of a single flowery tone, whether spoken by characters high-born or low), and his pacing leaden.
There is a germ of a good idea in the plot -- and perhaps that is what attracted film makers to his works, their plots rather than anything in their presentation. But the plot of this one is barely enough to sustain a short story. This audio book is almost 12 hours long.
In this book, Woolrich makes sure that anything he has to say or describe he says over and over again in as many ways as possible. If a character has a sarcastic retort to someone, Woolrich makes sure to report the retort, then point out that it was meant sarcastically, then underline that the sarcasm was meant disparagingly. The simplest scenes are drawn out, so they seem to go on forever. And not in a way that adds to the mood or reveals interesting things about the characters, as some ornately narrated works do. Instead they emphasize the obvious and point out the banal.
The first half of the book is the biggest slog. The second half picks up a bit, if you can get that far, but not much. It all leads nowhere very interesting. If this had been a short story, a brisk pace and a rapid presentation of what plot points there were might have mitigated against this, but short it definitely is not.
The most interesting section of the book to me was a brief side plot involving a traveling circus and an escaped lion. That section worked despite Woolrich's flaws as a writer, and of course is was comparatively short and sweet.
The narrator I suppose does her best with Woolrich's purple prose. But her flat affect doesn't do the work any favors. Her cop characters come across as more whiney than tough, although that is partly Woolrich's fault. One of the characters starts out half-crazed and suicidal, but you never get a sense of suppressed hysteria from the narrator. (Par for the course, half-way through the book this character changes on a dime and suddenly stops being suicidal and frantic and her original state is never mentioned again.)
The narrator does not elevate the poor source material in any way, but, again, perhaps that was just not possible. In summary, tedious, overwritten, underplotted, drab characters, unengaging narration.
I would recommend looking elsewhere for something in the hard-boiled or thriller line. Unless this was a completely atypical effort from Woolrich, probably best to consider another author altogether.
