About this listen

A captivating collection of ghost stories from "one of the most gifted writers working today" (New York Times), The Night Side of the River is as ingeniously provocative as it is downright spooky.

In this delightfully chilling collection, the iconic Jeanette Winterson turns her fearless gaze to the realm of ghosts, interspersing her own encounters with the supernatural alongside hair-raising fictions. Lifting the veil between the living and the dead, Winterson spirits us away to a haunted estate that ensnares a nomadic young couple in its own dark past, a staged immersive ghost tour gone awry, a West Village seance that threatens the bounds between AI and reality, and a vacation home in the metaverse where a widow visits an improved version of her deceased husband. Gloriously gothic and unnervingly contemporary, Winterson examines grief, revenge, and the myriad ways in which technology can disrupt the boundary between life and death.

JW is always worth a listen

Jeanette Winterson writes like she can’t help it and I love that about her. Some of the themes were a little repetitive for the way this collection was marketed, but I found it very enjoyable. My advice to her (not that she asked me) is to surrender any attempts at an American accent. It’s unnecessary and it’s distracting to hear a character from New York slinging around something between a Georgia drawl and a Manchester twang. It’s only in the one story, though and I love her so.

I really enjoyed this. Different kind of ghost stories. I found it thought provoking and definitely scary.

Great narrators

This was a surprisingly astute set of modern ghost stories that questions the very idea of what a ghost is and can be.

Just ok

I was hoping this would recreate the magic of Christmas Days, but alas it fell pretty flat for me. I was also surprised that Thin Air from Christmas Days was simply included in this collection, The narrator was not as mesmerizing as Imogen either.

Break it up!

Great collection of modern scary stories…I would have preferred more of a break between the stories as they sometimes run into each other and some have a rather abrupt ending so it leaves you wondering whether you have started a new piece to the existing story or a new story altogether. A really fun read otherwise! Thank you!

Great listen!

The stories and writing were great and I so enjoyed them for fall listening. They were engrossing, moving, creepy, one was even enlightening. The only drawback for listening was there was not enough of a pause between stories.

fascinating

this is an interesting and unique take on ghost stories. while most of these do not scratch the typical itch for a ghost story, many do, and those that do not are such unique takes on the genre that they are more than satisfying.

More a collection of thought exercises than a collection of ghost stories.

If you're looking for something chilling or suspenseful, this is not the audiobook for you.

Not Interesting

I expected ghost stories and this was more of a mix of stories showing what it us to be a ghost in this modern day. I found it uninteresting and actually only made it 1/2 through when I finally had to quit. Narrator did not make the stories catching enough to make me want to continue to listen either.
