Publisher's summary
Detective Nikki Evelyn Armstrong, a decorated member of the United States Navy and the New York City Police Department, stood at the site of the freshly dug grave surrounded by its moist piles of dirt. She reflected on what most thought to be a promising career.
In that moment of reflection, Nikki was in the second week of working on her new IAB case. Three months had passed since the “Shaker” case was taken down, and much of the press attention had died down. Most of her time was spent working with the U.S. Attorney, preparing the case for prosecution. The mayor of New York City, both U.S. senators for the state of New York and the U.S. attorney for the Southern and Eastern Districts for New York, also recognized her for her role in the Shaker drug and sex trafficking case, which extended to both jurisdictions.
Nikki received no less than six awards from community organizations for her efforts in getting drugs out of the community. She had been promoted to detective second grade and had received another commendation from an increasingly bitter commissioner. She also received recognition from the U.S. Navy for her work in capturing drug smugglers, drug dealers, gunrunners, and sex traffickers. Her press puppy had written several front-page pieces about Nikki and her career that went international. The commissioner was still hoping that she would just go away.
Her new case involved allegations of officers ripping off drug dealers just outside of her old precinct. She knew the area well. She had heard rumors of this activity just before being transferred to the IAB. Nikki couldn’t believe that this matter hadn’t already been investigated, but she had learned to keep some of her thoughts to herself. This was one of them.
It was early on a Saturday evening when she and her partner were assigned to conduct surveillance to keep watch on two patrol officers suspected of heavy involvement in the robbery scheme.
About three hours into the surveillance, a call came over the radio of a possible domestic violence situation at an address Nikki knew all too well. It was the apartment of the beefy woman and her kids. She had first encountered this family during her first week out of the academy.
Nikki was fully aware that this was a matter for officers on patrol; however, the address was only three blocks from where they were set up. She knew from her prior experience that the beefy woman was beating one or more of those children.
She turned to her partner. “We have to respond.”
“What the hell are you talking about?” he said. “We are on a sensitive surveillance. Let the uniforms handle this.”

Story
His grandfather’s lynching in the deep South, the murders of his two older brothers, and his verbally harsh and absent father all worked together to form Jason Wilson’s childhood. But it was his decision to acknowledge his emotions and yield to God’s call on his life that made Wilson the man and leader he is today. As the founder of one of the country’s most esteemed youth organizations, Wilson explains the dangers men face in our culture’s definition of “masculinity” and gives listeners hope that healing is possible.

When Michael Fanone self-deployed to the Capitol on January 6, 2021, he had no idea his life was about to change. When he got to the front of the line, he urged his fellow officers to hold it against the growing crowd of insurrectionists—until he found himself pulled into the mob, tased until he had a heart attack, and viciously beaten with a Blue Lives Matter flag as shouts to kill him rang out. Now, Fanone is ready to tell the full story of that infamous day, along with exploring our country’s most critical issues as someone who has had firsthand experience with many of them.

Blood in the Soil is the first book about the investigation into the shooting of Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt and his country attorney in Gwinnett County, Georgia, in 1978. But this book is not primarily about Larry Flynt, or even his shooter (the serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin), though both men are of course important characters in the story. This true account is told alternately from the perspective of Detective J. Michael Cowart and by following Franklin's life from childhood through his execution.

On a chilly spring morning in Brooklyn, 19-year-old Linda Sarsour stared at her reflection, dressed in a hijab for the first time. She saw in the mirror the woman she was growing to be - a young Muslim American woman unapologetic in her faith and her activism, who would discover her innate sense of justice in the aftermath of 9/11. Now heralded for her award-winning leadership of the Women’s March on Washington, Sarsour offers a “moving memoir [that] is a testament to the power of love in action” (Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow).

Story
An urgent, no-holds-barred tale of gang life, guerrilla warfare, intergenerational trauma, and interconnected violence between the United States and El Salvador, Roberto Lovato’s memoir excavates family history and reveals the intimate stories beneath headlines about gang violence and mass Central American migration, one of the most important, yet least-understood humanitarian crises of our time - and one in which the perspectives of Central Americans in the United States have been silenced and forgotten.

The most RJ Young knew about guns was that they could get him killed. Until, recently married to a white woman and in desperate need of a way to relate to his gun-loving father-in-law, Young does the unimaginable: He accepts Charles's gift of a Glock. Let It Bang is the compelling story of the author's unexpected obsession - he eventually becomes an NRA-certified pistol instructor - and of his deep dive into the heart of America's gun culture: what he sees as the domino effect of White fear, White violence, Black fear, rinse, repeat.

Story
On New Year’s Day 2013, two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner Gene Weingarten asked three strangers to, literally, pluck a day, month, and year from a hat. That day - chosen completely at random - was Sunday, December 28, 1986, by any conventional measure a most ordinary day. Weingarten spent the next six years proving that there is no such thing. That Sunday between Christmas and New Year’s turned out to be filled with comedy, tragedy, implausible irony, cosmic comeuppances, kindness, cruelty, heroism, cowardice, genius, idiocy, and much more....

On 20 May 1999, the South Australian Police were called to investigate a disused bank in the unassuming town of Snowtown, in connection to the disappearance of multiple missing people. The police were not prepared for the chilling scene that awaited them. The officers found six barrels within the abandoned bank vault, each filled with acid and the remains of eight individuals. Story
During the Depression, economic anxieties found an outlet in a series of child murders that triggered an irrational nationwide hysteria: pedophiliac psychopaths were overrunning the country. As America was brought to rage and fury by the press and the FBI, lynch mobs took to the streets, reason gave way to doomsday scenarios, and one father was even driven to murder his three daughters to “save them” from a degenerate crime wave. A terrifying cautionary essay, Panic explores the combustible mix of unfounded fears, moral crusades, and the dangers of collective thinking.
