About this listen

In “No Nonsense Spirituality,” author and philosopher, Britt Hartley offers a groundbreaking exploration that marries the rigor of rational inquiry with the depths of human spirituality. Best of all? No faith in the unbelievable is required.

Drawing from the wellsprings of science, philosophy, religion, and psychology, this illuminating work charts a course for those who seek a meaningful life without dogma or woo. Hartley draws on her work as an atheist spiritual director to provide practical guidelines for navigating a secular approach to ritual, morality, awe, transcendence, wisdom, community, intuition, connection, and meaning that can withstand the harsh truths of reality.

With wisdom gleaned from the best of rationalism and the timeless insights of religion, “No Nonsense Spirituality” offers pathways to the good life that honor the complexity of the human experience. Engaging, thought-provoking, and deeply resonant, this book invites readers to explore a new understanding of what it means to live the good life in the middle of a culture that ranges from cold skepticism to the unhealthy truth claims of religion and pseudoscience that cannot stand up to modern sensibilities.

Brittney is so relatable, honest, and balanced. I love the reflection questions at the end of each chapter, which help you dive deeper into your own values, journey, and blind spots. For those who value spirituality but want to choose their own beliefs (or no beliefs at all), this book offers great practical advice and insights.

Excellent guide when leaving a high demand religion

To me the best media makes me want to be a better person. For me this book embodies that to the highest degree.

I will say the automated narrator makes the text feel a little cold, but I can also appreciate that an automated narrator probably makes the book cheaper and therefore accessible to more people.

I am so grateful for this book.

Honest and Compassionate

If you are wondering between ideas of the traditional and the metaphysical trying to find your way. Wanting to believe it’s possible that crystals could bring good energy but at the same time want a church to give you purpose. Bouncing between just believing in something we can’t see - to - then logically questioning what religion tells you.

Well I think this might bring light to why you feel that way. Gives you perspective about what you fear and how those things provide comfort. You learn you can create your own meaning and purpose in this, maybe pointless, life. Despite being on the ledge of nihilism, we can find bits of wisdom in all sectors. It’s just now your job to create your spiritual life and bring meaning.

Thanks to Rhett McLaughlin for sharing her work on the podcast Ear Biscuits. It’s what I’ve been needing desperately. And thanks to Brittney for this amazing book.

This was an amazing book Brit. I would love to hear it read by you. The AI bot did a decent job but I love hearing your ideas from you directly.

Loved the book. The AI reader was a little lackluster.

Story was phenomenal. Very insightful and motivating. Made me feel “seen” and understood. AI voice is terrible. The citations are great but the ai voice does not relay them properly.

Reassuring for a reconstructing Catholic

The content of the book is wonderful. The Virtual Voice narration is TERRIBLE. I won’t buy another book that has VV narration. I would have paid $20 for this book if it had been narrated by a human. The mispronunciations, odd cadences, and poorly-communicated citations made it almost unlistenable. DOWN WITH VIRTUAL VOICE!!!!
