About this listen

In this book, Jim West finds himself traveling to a small, remote hunting lodge in the Pecos Wilderness area in New Mexico to rendezvous with an old friend and do some hiking. His friend stands him up, and Jim is about to return home when a murder occurs in the lodge. Law enforcement jumps in, and Jim’s early departure plans are scrubbed.

When a second murder occurs less than 24 hours later, things really start to get dicey. Both crimes were intricately planned to mislead the authorities. Additionally, no one appears to have a motive for the killings, and everyone has an alibi.

Up against a wall with time running out, the deputy-in-charge approaches West and asks him to be their man on the inside, but West is adamant that this is not his case to solve. Since his retirement from the Air Force, however, Fate has had her own plans for West. Why should this be any different?

Mystery with an escalating tension

The story starts with a background that makes the motives of one of the protagonists apparent later in the book.

This was a good mystery with well-developed characters that leaves the reader guessing throughout the progression of the story. I enjoyed the book and found the narration to be top-rate helping me to understand the motivations of the characters and making the listening enjoyable.
I look forward to the next adventures of Jim West.

Worth twice the price of admission

Bob Doerr has written a very intriguing story, as an audio book is the best my wife and have listened to so far. Mike Steele’s rendition of the book puts you right in the story, with all Mikes voices it’s a good crowd . Thanks guys. When is the next book 😁

Suspensefull and Entertaining

This is the first “Jim West” story I have read or listened to. Jim is a calm, laid-back, nice guy character. It seems that murder and trouble are drawn to him. He has hidden skills that help him stay safe and solve murders. The book is well written, and the author weaves all the scenes together.

The narrator does a nice job, and he has a calm voice to match the Jim West character. He is easy to listen to, has a good pace, and differentiates from character to character. He has a good style for female voices, as they are not over-the-top.

I highly recommend this book and look forward to more books by Bob Doerr and listening to more books by Mike Steele.
