Publisher's summary

Alone in the world and struggling to make ends meet, Texas war widow Sarah Winborne will do anything to keep her two small children safe and her hard-won ranch from going under. She hasn't fought for so long to lose everything, and if that means marrying a stranger to protect her family's future, then so be it.

She never expected anything but a business arrangement, but something about Benton Wheeler's broad shoulders and kind eyes awakens emotions she's long since buried. He makes her feel beautiful. He makes her feel desired. He makes her feel like a woman again. And even though their marriage was never intended to be more than a matter of convenience, as Benton stands between her small family and the wild and dangerous West, Sarah may just realize that the cowboy she married is the love she never dreamed she would find.

Don’t judge a book by its author’s gender!

I’ve seen this author’s works on Audible for years and (upon learning that ‘Leigh’ Greenwood was actually ‘Lee’), I’ve always passed. Lesson learned. The concept of gender equality works both ways. It turns out that men are equally capable of spinning a great historical western romance ... or at least this one is.

I guess it's ok

this book have more negative than positive I felt like I am reading the story over so many times it gets boring I like Salty he's a gentleman but for the rest of the family they are annoying and make the story go on for too long

Good and not so good

This was an okay tale, but there were times I wanted to reach into scenes and give Ellen, age 7, a good, hard spanking. Her mother could see the child's disobedience, but made mental excuses for her. She got away with too much, especially telling everything she knew. Nobody ever tried to teach her to keep quiet about secrets even when telling endangered them. She was never disciplined.
Ellen came across more like a rebellious seventeen-year-old brat than the sweet little girl her mom saw.
The biggest problem was the narration. Sometimes it was just okay, but much of the time, it was stiff and mechanical, like a robo-voice. I came close to stopping and deleting the book from my phone, but wanted to see what would happen [barely] enough to continue. Mostly, I wondered if it could get any worse. It could, I discovered.
Salty was too forgiving, too lenient, and occasionally, too trusting to be believable. I've lived much of my life in Texas, and no Texas man I've ever met would be so tolerant of the stupid, evil, or selfish deeds of the other men in this story. His sleeping on the porch, instead of in the house when Roger came back was ludicrous. Oh, let's advertise that this marriage is far from normal! That whole scene was really far-fetched.
Still, I admit to finishing it and smiling at the end.

Good story

I enjoyed this audiobook and it had a fairly good, if unoriginal story. The narrator was a little monotone at times, but overall did s good job.

Not bad nor bad

It was not bad at all. I love the narrator! Had a few twists, and turns in the story. The one thing that made me give it a four out of five is I couldn’t understand why everybody was in love with the main character.

The strength of the mother and her children

When the previously thought deceased man appeared was interfering with the new family, in my opinion was Hitchcockish.
