What happens when an EMP sends California back into the stone age?

When an EMP bomb knocks out the power in LA and the rest of the United States, Ailani Ho's main goal is to survive the end of the world. Then she discovers her sister was on a plane when the bomb exploded, and she can't rest until she knows if her sister is alive or dead.

~Disclaimer: I received a free audiobook copy of this book.~

I may pick up more EMP fiction after this listen/read (book was available on KU, so I could read along). After several misses recently in the freebie department, it is nice to pick up something I actually enjoyed.

The characters in this book are nuanced and interesting. They are a mixed bag of folks with actual skills, wisdom, street smarts and people skills. Nobody really appears to come with the whole package (Walt probably comes the closest), and they make some questionable choices here and there. But I imagine most of us wouldn’t fare much better. It takes awhile for the situation to fully sink in for some of the cast. They did have a lot of luck too.

The narrator is certainly someone I could see folks either loving or hating. I didn’t find the voices particularly off-putting, but I imagine some of them would grate on people's nerves if you didn’t like them.

Survival, illness, injury, personal growth, and a journey make up this story. It ended up being a fairly satisfying story.

The main character Ailani is so annoying and just plain dumb. I would have left her after the first week! It was hard to listen to. I didn’t care for the accents the narrator used for the characters.

Ok story, but…

Good array of characters and the aspects of what was going on around them, their. skills to survive was well done, believable and held one to the end. Given audio for my voluntary review.

I loved this audio book. The characters were awesome and the story line was spectacular! I couldn’t believe the ending! Narrator did a wonderful job bringing it to life!

Loved it

Narrator was so bad. I cannot listen to her whiny voice or the voices she gives the characters. This is story gives tale to persons who would never survive a real apocalypse. ‘Let’s part, let’s film, let’s surf, let’s do everything but get serious about surviving.” Pass it by.

Had to return.
