About this listen

The first book in a new series from New York Times best-selling author M A Comley, who has sold over two and a half million books worldwide.

He stands in the shadows. Watching them. DI Sara Ramsey's life is about to change forever. Recently moved to the area and in charge of a new team, she's tasked with finding a serial killer terrorising a rural community. Crimes as heinous as this rarely happen in picturesque rural idylls.

The community is living in fear, desperate for Sara to keep them safe. When the killer changes his MO and abducts a vulnerable resident, Sara realises she is in a race against time to prevent the killer from claiming yet another victim.

Good Start

Good Start to what I am hoping will be a great series. DI Sara Ramsey is clever and well written. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

It Was Interesting

I didn't feel any kind of connection to any character in this book. Maybe I wasn't supposed to feel anything. This wasn't what I would call a psychological thriller. Maybe it's more of a police procedural.

I don't know what the deal was with her former brother-in-law, but that situation was kind of creepy. Sara's former mother-in-law seemed to almost try and force her into continuing to grieve for her deceased spouse.

The police didn't seem very police like to me. DI Sara Ramsey was more interested in consoling the victims, finishing her coffee, and keeping her secret about her past than she was about solving the murders. I don't know that she did anything much other than question family members.

The murderer had a reason for killing that even upset the other bad guy. Whatever we were supposed to feel about the killer was interesting. Was the killer truly awful? Was the point of some things to show the killer's humanity? Then to turn around and show the killer really had no humanity? I guess I was supposed to feel whatever I was feeling at the moment.

Who does that? I have to wonder if a suspect had not been provided, would Sara and Carla (I think that was her partner's name) have ever solved the case? Also, solving the case and tying everything together was handed to them and so anti climatic that it was ridiculous.

There was one mystery that was left open, but I don't know if I care enough to find out whodunit although I have my own strong suspicion.

I enjoyed this.

I love starting a new series and it’s even better when that first book is good. The narration of the audiobook made listening a pleasure. The characters and the story, although almost bringing me to tears at one point, made a great book. Brava, M A Comley!
