About this listen

'The literary phenomenon of the decade.' Guardian
'The book that defined a generation.' Stylist
**The modern classic behind the BAFTA-winning series. **
Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in the west of Ireland, but the similarities end there. In school, Connell is popular and well-liked, while Marianne is a loner. But when the two strike up a conversation - awkward but electrifying - something life-changing begins.
Normal People is a story of mutual fascination, friendship and love. It takes us from that first conversation to the years beyond, in the company of two people who try to stay apart but find they can't.
'Tender and devastating.' Guardian
'A book to cancel plans for.' Grazia
'A classic coming-of-age love story.' Vogue

The time period aligns very well with that of my own life, and I found out that the author is just one year my junior, so no wonder it all felt so real. I don’t have much to say other than I don’t have any criticisms. It was enjoyable start to end. I was rooting for them. Maybe the one thing I might have changed was a slightly longer ‘courtship’ or easing into their romance at the start. But even that I’m not too sure on. I need to go back and watch the TV show now.

It felt real.

Why is Marianne like that? Why is Connell like that? Just why? Why did it end like that. Just why

It was boring, petty, and generally frustrating. I'm disappointed I listened until the end - I kept hoping it would get better

So, so bad

I picked up this book on a whim after seeing it over and over on store shelves. I didn’t know much about it—just figured, if it’s everywhere, it must be good, right?

Well… not quite.

From the start, I struggled to connect with it. The plot felt like it was meandering with no clear direction, and I kept wondering, where is this going? I tried the audiobook too, but the performer’s forced, overly dramatic voice (especially the male characters) was honestly unbearable. It didn’t help my already dwindling interest.

Despite really trying to push through, I couldn’t finish it. And I usually like to give books a fair shot. This might be one of those rare ones I don’t even want to force myself to finish. It just wasn’t for me.

Irritating

I had to stop after 30 minutes because I didn't get into the story. But most of all the problem is with the male character. The voice the narrator puts on is comical. Makes them sound like they are total idiots. Such a caricature of a male voice. How on earth was this okayed by the production??????

Stopped after 30 minutes
