Publisher's summary

Sometimes the only way out is to fall further in…

As Earth's leaders gather to usher in a new era of interplanetary cooperation, a remarkable discovery in the skies above New Kerguelen threatens to destroy the peace on both worlds.

The consequences are so immediate and the potential ramifications so colossal, thoughts of a new era quickly fall by the wayside.

And when all that counts is surviving the tumultuous present, responsibility might fall again on Dan McCarthy -- humanity's once unwilling conduit between worlds -- to bravely take a leap like no other...

Leap of Destiny

I am uncontrollably hooked to these books. Awesome is nothing short of how I feel about this series. The only thing regrettable is that I am not starting the last of the series.

Drags a little

Let me start by saying, I really like this series! I like the story, the characters, and can’t wait to see where this is going to go!!

But, as someone who listened to all the books in this series (and rememberers what happened), this one seemed to really drag.

It feels like the author wrote this with the first time reader (who has not read any of the other books) in mind. It seemed like he gave each characters back story and reiterated what happened in all the previous books.

I realize this has been helpful in other series I’ve listened to, this time it felt harder. The author also has a tendency to have the characters repeat what they are going to do.

“We’re going to walk through that door, turn on the light switch, and walk down the hall”, said Bill. “So we’re going to walk through that door, turn on the light switch, and walk down the hall?”, asked Sam. “Ok, lets walk through that door, turn on the light switch, and walk down the hall”, declared Tom.

Arrrgh!!! Get to the action!!!! I found myself considering fast forwarding, but afraid I might miss something. Then at the end of the chapter, being disappointed that I wouldn’t have missed anything I didn’t already know.

I’m no expert, this is just how it felt to me.

Still interesting!

Ending was abrupt, but understandable. I enjoyed the story and look forward to the next book.

Not Alone Series

This is a very long series, close to 100 hours of listening in the unabridged audiobook format of six novels. Given the length, you need a voice pleasant to hear and James Patrick Cronin does a terrific job throughout. Pacing, tempo, male and female voices, etc., overall production very well done. Not Alone is a SciFi series and Book One was released in August of 2016, book 6 in June of 2020, all by Audible Studios. Not Alone is character-driven, albeit few main characters – which is nice listening and you get to know everyone. No need for struggling to keep track of who-is-who, and thanks to the excellent narration, no problems with who-is-speaking-to-who.

Plot. Dan McCarthy, while riding his bike on a delivery, collides with a robber who drops an envelope containing definitive proof of a government cover-up. Human knowledge of aliens, i.e., we are Not Alone, has been a fact since 1938. Early on, you're skeptical and before the books are finished - well, no spoilers. But, SciFi lovers will be beyond pleased as Dan's amazing adventures unfold. Start with book one, and read in sequence or you'll miss a great deal.

Liked. Character development, humanoid, and otherwise. You like most, hate a few. The ultimate goodness of mankind, and any potential visitors, is something we all wish to be true.

Not so hot? Repetitive. Most noticeable in the series, Falconer re-caps a great deal, almost as if he needs to remind himself where the plot is and how we got here, reading from his own notes. Painful to listen to for anyone who is binge-listening to all six books in the series. Kept mumbling, 'Yeah, yeah, I know, I know - move on." Actually did have to fast-forward a bit.

No clicking knees, not a blood-and-guts type horror SciFi. This is a first contact story out of a vivid imagination telling us what it might really be like. World politics, wonder, fear, greed, hope - it's all here. No sex, nothing offensive. Recommended!

I hope the wait for book VI is not long.

A superb and compelling story. I will now be speculating in the middle of the night about what is to become of the 4 who traveled through the stargate to the new planet. I am hopeful that the wait for Book VI will not be long.

still a great story line

I wish there were an epilog for people who didn't read the first 4 books. The long and convoluted sentences to try to bring readers up to speed could be managed much differently. They really run that part of the story telling.

too much foreshadowing

I basically liked the continuation, but all the foreshadowing in the first half of the book was too much.

Another good read in this series

Just when I thought this book would be tying everything up and concluding this series, the ending opens the gateway to another installment in the tale. I have become fond of the characters in this story and how the narrator brings each personality to life. Can’t wait for the next volume!
