About this listen

Their friendship would kill her....

Weaver and fiber artist Edith “Pen” Meyer knew her friend Sandy Merritt’s relationship with a married man was wrong. She had even urged Sandy to take out a restraining order against Kenneth Carpenter. Which was why her call to Sandy on February 23, 2005, seemed to come from out of the blue. During it, she told Sandy to drop the restraining order and get back together with Ken.

Pen was never seen again.

One man stood to gain from Pen’s disappearance: Ken Carpenter. But evidence was bleak: no blood, no DNA, no body. Until detectives found notes hidden beneath a leather chair that turned out to be a playbook for murder....

Loved writing and story
Narrator is way too flat

Mr Flynn often goes into almost too much forensic and evidentiary detail as his background is that of a prosecutor, but in this case it’s necessary.

Love that Mr Flynn covers stories that aren’t the big, well-known cases. It allows me to get more absorbed in the whole world of the story

I highly recommend his book centered around his own prosecution for the murder of a mother and daughter in DC.
It’s amazing once you get past the prologue and the narrator was increcible in voicing all the characters I could literally see the judge in my mind from his reading

The writing is great

Rolled right on through to the end! Brilliant performance, story, and outcome! Looking forward to more from Flynn

All in all a decent book that was narrated well, it just wasn't very captivating.

I was looking for a little more suspense.

The narration began a little too slow and descriptive, but then speeded up and provided the listener with some u expected twists. Overall, it’s a detailed smart investigation and great story. I wish I would watch a movie based on it!

Sad but inspiring story

This is fantastic telling but it stopped and won’t move forward past 5 minutes in chapter 11.
Bummer. Will attempt a re-download.

Great until it stopped in chapter 11

Well written. Never boring and beautifully narrated. The story is almost unbelievable. At times I thought “this has to be fiction”!

Almost utterly unbelievable

Narrator was very good. Details of trial had to be followed carefully as a layman. Story heartrenching. Ken a narcissist and self involved man.

A life not to be forgotten.

I selected this title because I am familiar with the setting and appreciate many aspects of rural New England culture. The author failed to convey the charm of the countryside and it’s inhabitants.

The victim was clearly a strong, talented woman but the portrayal of her is sparse. This is partially understandable because her family declined to speak with the authors but a better writer could have better used the recollections of friends and community members to connect the reader with Pen.

The reader’s flat intonation was grating and her voices were so bad they were laughable.

Reader Spoiled This Average Book

This audio book hits all the feels. It made me laugh, feel enraged, cry, and love dogs even more. I’m not sure it is not based on a real case, it is so moving. I mean the characters are so fleshed out that I really care and I truly feel a loss for the life that was taken. Wonderful and thorough depiction of all, especially the murdered victim. I wish I was friends with them. I highly recommend this book and definitely the audio.

What a Ride!
