Story
It's been said that all great literature boils down to one of two stories—a man takes a journey, or a stranger comes to town. While mystery writers have been successfully using both approaches for generations, there's something undeniably alluring in the nature of a stranger: the uninvited guest, the unacquainted neighbor, the fish out of water. In the newest collection of stories by the Mystery Writers of America, each author weaves a fresh tale surrounding the eerie feeling that comes when a stranger enters our midst, featuring stories by prolific mystery writers.

Story
It all started with a simple, yet sneakily difficult challenge from global best-selling author Harlan Coben: Pick a bird of prey, then use it as the inspiration for a brand-new story. The response from some of the best writers on the planet: Game on! The result: Eleven stories that are twisty, scary, surprising and bursting with imagination. An egg worth more than its weight in gold. A mysterious operative known only as Owl. An eagle-watcher who sees more than she should. Even a story that somehow places the Maltese Falcon in a nursing home.

Story
Death is a topic Bradford Douglas is intimately familiar with. The young attorney is on a crusade against capital punishment. He’s saved a number of death row inmates, but none of his cases has been as tough as the one he now faces: Henry Combs, a vicious serial killer, has only hours to live when Douglas is summoned for a Hail Mary attempt to have the man’s sentence commuted to life imprisonment. As Douglas races to pursue whatever strategies he can think of, he finds his passion for justice giving way to something altogether different. An obsession.

Good but not great
Most of the stories were good but some of them were a waste of a listen so I give this read an average score of 4. The good part is that every chapter is a new story so if you don't like one, just skip it.

Short stories vs full length stories
Each story was gripping enough for me to continue. The narration of each was easy on the ears. I agree with the title, though for me it's 3am. But I left each story wanting more. To know what happened with the white van and son, Dr. Bell, the crypt and homeless vet, etc. I guess I'm more of a full length story reader.

Great stories…
I loved the stories, although they weren’t scary as Jeffrey promised. Matt Godfrey sometimes has a warble in his voice that can be quite annoying, but when he’s not doing that, he’s enjoyable to listen to.
