About this listen

After her father left, Rachel had to dedicate her life to managing her household: her two younger sisters, her disabled mother, and her three-year-old nephew. When Rachel's not struggling to look after all of them, she makes her living cleaning the houses of wealthy families - including the Wests, where a surprise now awaits her....

A lifetime of drifting in other people's currents has finally left Claire high and dry. First it was her parents, then the popular crowd in school, and finally her fiancé. Now she's returned to Hartley-by-the-Sea to recover. But running into Rachel brings back memories of past mistakes, and Claire wonders if she now has the courage to make them right.

Soon Claire's brother, Andrew, asks Rachel to keep an eye on Claire, which is the last thing either woman wants. But as their lives threaten to fall apart, both Claire and Rachel begin to realize what they need most is a friend. The kind of friend they once were to each other and perhaps can be again….

I loved the first book in the series with a different narrator. So I’m really disappointed that I can’t even finish this one because the narrator just destroys the book.

Wrong narrator for this book

The narration is horrible! The narrator puts emphasis on bizarre words. Her inflections are so flat! The conversations are so halting and unnatural that I sometimes checked to see if the book had somehow paused, before the next line would come! And with a slow-moving story, this narration makes it difficult to get past the irritation and get into the characters. Very unpleasant!

Couldn’t even finish it!

Rachel was a bit of a control freak IMO. It all had to be her way because that’s what she’s been used to because of having to play mom/dad to her sisters. She holds a grudge against a primary school friend who stopped talking then. The misunderstandings, the presumptions, stood in the way of starting over as adults. But, thankfully it all works out. What I hated was the narrator. I had to speed up the narration in order to enjoy it at all. This narrator, while does good enough different voices and accents, was just tooooo slow.

Good story- bad narration

I loved this story. One suggestion is that narration seems oddly slow. I ended up listening to it at 1.25 speed because it was driving me nuts at normal speed.

Ugh! This narrator may be the worst one yet. I bet the story was good, but she made impossible for me to finish the book.

Story was wonderful, loved the voice of the performer but all of her weird pauses didn’t fit.

Great story

I loved this story, as I have all of Kate Hewitt’s books. I saw the negative reviews about the narration, so I sped it up to 1.5, and it was perfect. The narrator was actually really good at that speed. Well worth a listen, and I am about to get the next book in the series!

I have enjoyed both of Kate Hewitt books in this series. It’s refreshing to have layers of depth in the characters Kate portrays in her stories. Real world problems set in a quaint seaside setting offers the perfect mix between escape and realism. The narration was painfully slow, but when sped up to 1.2 speed it was perfect.

Listen to this book on 1.25 narration speed
