About this listen

The Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Color Purple, Possessing the Secret of Joy, and The Temple of My Familiar now gives us a beautiful new novel that is at once a deeply moving personal story and a powerful spiritual journey. In Now Is the Time to Open Your Heart, Alice Walker has created a work that ranks among her finest achievements: the story of a woman’s spiritual adventure that becomes a passage through time, a quest for self, and a collision with love.

Kate has always been a wanderer. A well-published author, married many times, she has lived a life rich with explorations of the natural world and the human soul. Now, at fifty-seven, she leaves her lover, Yolo, to embark on a new excursion, one that begins on the Colorado River, proceeds through the past, and flows, inexorably, into the future. As Yolo begins his own parallel voyage, Kate encounters celibates and lovers, shamans and snakes, memories of family disaster and marital discord, and emerges at a place where nothing remains but love.

Told with the accessible style and deep feeling that are its author’s hallmarks, Now Is the Time to Open Your Heart is Alice Walker’s most surprising achievement.

A beautiful addition to my Alice Walker collection. I loved the interweaving of dreams, reality, history, and world knowledge. I loved it and it was captivating.

I find it rare that a book challenges and fulfills its readers on so many levels as this one. Strange as it sounds, listening to this book felt pleasantly like cleaning and re-energizing my mind. It was hypnotic. It challenged me on a mental, emotional, and spiritual level that I enjoyed thoroughly. The narrator did an excellent job, as well. I look forward to listening to it again. My only disappointment is that I can't find any other novels by Alice Walker on Audible.

Oh, Grandmother. What a lovely journey to listen to. I swayed with this story, the only story I've read this far by Alice Walker. I plan on reading/listening to more of her works in the near future.

Quite lovely to listen to.

I love how in all her books she covers so much history and background. she covers so much that I've wondered about in life in general.

Awesome read

I enjoyed it. An interesting perspective on stepping out on faith and discovering your self and the world around you. At the same time a relationship that was about to crumble had been rebuilt because their lives had changed after certain experience's.
Loved Alfie as the narrator.

As much as I love, Alice Walker, this was a total miss for me, really tedious and boring and disconnected. I have no idea even what the story was supposed to teach me. Of course, Woodard is a wonderful reader, that didn’t improve the story for me at all.

Sorry. Tedious.
