About this listen

Sherry has struggled all her life to understand who she is, where she comes from, and, most importantly, why her mother slapped her cheek one summer afternoon. The incident has haunted Sherry, and it causes her to dig into her family's past. Like many family histories, it is fractured and reluctant to reveal its secrets; but Sherry remains determined.

In just a few days' time, her extended family will gather for a reunion, and Sherry sets off across the country with her mother, Dumpling, to join them. What Sherry and Dumpling find on their trip is nothing less than the assorted pieces of their family's past. Pulled together, they reveal a history of amazing survival and abundant joy.

Good Book

Good book, although the story line is a little confusing in the beginning. The narrator does an excellent job with all the voices.

What a book!

Oh I loved it! From beginning to end! I didn’t want to stop listening. It was heart wrenching. Nyelle is …I have no word to describe her that is befitting. It’s a beautiful book. I laughed and I cried. I loved it!

a worthwhile listen

this story contains a lot of characters across generations and within generations. it takes a fit to keep them all straight, but the author does a great job of character development and so it's not as hard as you might think. The story touches on slavery, incest, race relations, rural urban divide and above all, family.

Wow!!!

Loved it! I was reluctant in the beginning. I really didn't want to listen to a book about slaves. It hurts too much. I'm so glad I did, because this book is so much more.

In the Mirror We Stand

A story you have to listen to with an open mind and a strong heart. Some parts will make you cry and others will make you laugh out loud. A great reflection of what people of color (particularly Black and Native) have endured and how that struggle still presents itself even today.

Listened Twice

I listened twice. Sad that incest even happens, and we have to persevere and live our best lives with the trauma of surviving it. This story was well written and helps us see that if we take time to learn about others and their life experiences, we can understand why they are the way they are. Strong themes of acceptance and perseverance rum through the story line.I love that 'family' persevered despite trauma. The narrators ethnicity brought the characters to life. I laughed at moments and that surprised me.
