Publisher's summary

Most people only know her as Justin Bieber's mom, but Pattie Mallette has had an incredible journey of her own. Many people have heard of her son's rags to riches triumph. A few know she was a teen mom who had to overcome a drug and alcohol addiction. Even fewer know the rest of her story. Now, for the first time in detail, Pattie shares with the world the story of a girl who felt abandoned and unloved. Of a teenager who made poor choices. Of a young woman who attempted suicide and could hardly bear to believe that God would ever care for her. One who messed up, got pregnant, and got a second chance.

Every listener will find themselves somewhere in Pattie's painful journey of redemption. They will be encouraged by her example that what was once broken can become whole. Pattie's story will inspire listeners to believe that even in the darkest of places, there's always hope.

For those who feel unlovable, there's always love. And for those who believe they're a lost cause, there's always room for another chance.

A MUST READ

This book is but nominal. It really opened my eyes to see that there really is no struggle in life that can stop you from moving forward when you know God has your back. This book made me think full for my life and reminded me what is important.

Great read! Very relatable

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! As a huge Beiber fan I knew I absolutely had to read this book. I was hoping it would have more details about Justin unfortunately most of the book is about her life before he was born with a few references about his dad in between the pages you can tell it was an abusive relationship. I can relate to the drug addiction part and feeling hopeless about life. Good for her that she didn’t give up. Getting pregnant was a real life saver, she really turned her life around and started doing better. The best part of the book is when she describes how it was like raising Justin as a single young mother struggling and not giving up, very emotional I almost cried! What can I say, this girl is tough as nails, she’s a biscuit

Moving and inspirational story.

This book was not what I expected. I was very moved by Pattie Mallette's story and although I am not a religious person I didn't feel she tried to shove her faith down my throat. It was part of her healing so an important part of the story. I could relate to her struggles so I felt her story really spoke to me. And she did a great job narrating!

Very Impressive Young Woman

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I have recommended it to several people already. Whether a Bieber fan or not, her story and how she got through her challenges is worth the time to listen or read. I am not a fan of Justin Bieber's music, dancing, etc - but I am a huge fan of him as a person. I've seen him and his Mom on TV enough times to know that they are very real. I admire and respect both of them very much. He's adorable, respectful, and doing very well with getting through the BS that goes along with fame. That comes from a strong moral fiber...and as he always does, he has his Mom to thank for that.

What other book might you compare Nowhere but Up to and why?

Every story like this is distantly connected in my opinion. I admire when people go through challenges, are open to telling about them, and ultimately become successful, whether famous on their own, famous through relation/association, or just healthy normal everyday people. Patti very much impressed me.

What does Pattie Mallette bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I just enjoy having the author tell the story because it feels more real. And her young voice reminded me how young she was though her most difficult times.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When she had reconnected with her father and what happened after that. I really appreciated her repeated references to Jeremy being a good Dad. What a classy woman she is to do that.

Any additional comments?

While I realize religion got her through so many of her tough times, it had a little too much bible references for a lot of people I've talked to.

The revelation of happiness because of God

Where does Nowhere but Up rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Her story is one of a kind and even if you haven't dealt with any of her problems in her past, you can truly learn from her story because of her faith in God and His grace that forms her life in the best way. Leading her and her son in onto the right path.

What did you like best about this story?

What I loved the most about her story, were the influence God had in her life. How she would have her revelation as it was meant to be and how you should always look for the better in people and forgive for yourself, to move on. And always look for the positive ways in a situation, because the negatives will always find their ways into everything, so leave them out as much as you can, and take it from there, with a postive attitude.

What does Pattie Mallette bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

A few years back I started reading the book but I only made it 80 pages in and I would eventually stop reading it. Pattie reading the story out loud for me, had such a big influence on how the sentences were supposed to be read. The story became more alive for me, than if would've read it myself.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The part where John tells her to stand on the chair and take his hand, only so he could pull her down from the chair and say ''think about it, is it easier for you to pull me up or for me to pull you down?'' It moved me in such way. What a way to look at the positive and negatives.
And when she were in doubt if Scooter were the right manager for Justin, her friend came with a stranger whom said that he had a feeling that she were in trouble with a jewish man and God was yelling ''yes, yes and yes!'' for her to choose him. That made my jaw drop, because of how surprised I were of God's way to make things happen in such a surprising way, that made total sense. Because God makes Us wait a long time... and then a little bit longer, before revealing His answers to Our prayers.

Any additional comments?

Weather you are a fan of Justins or doesn't come across him in a way that would lead you to his mom. I can promise you his mothers, Pattie's, story will leave a mark on you in some way, because we all have different point of views on things, so maybe you will read her story and have a different view of her story, than I do.

Awesome book!

Prior to listening to this audio book (narrated by the author) I had no idea what to expect, and a prejudicial voice told me, "Don't get your hopes up, it probably won't be very good." So it wasn't until like a year after purchasing the book that I actually listened to it, even though I am a huge fan of Justin Bieber.

Pattie Mallete, who more often than not is simply referred to as "Justin Bieber's mom," pours her heart and soul into this book about her incredible journey in life and is brave andcourageousfor doing so. She literally reveals her deepest and darkest secrets, which also include some not very flattering events about Justin's father, Jeremy.

While listening to the book, like a little kid I kept thinking to myself, "Talk about Justin already, I want to hear about Justin, this book is so dark." However, the first portion of the book where she discusses her struggles and upbringing is really the crux of the book and people who aresurvivorsof sexual abuse (and perhaps those struggling with drug and alcohol addiction) will find solace in her words.

The book also spends a fair amount of time discussing her faith in God, something not really up my alley since I am agnostic; however, she doesn'tproselytizeor shove faith or religion down the reader's throat. She simply shares from her heart, which makes this book so incredible for people from all walks of life, beliebers and non-beliebers alike. She makes it clear that she didn't force faith/religion on Justin either, but simply gave him the tools he needed to make his own decision.

I was shocked at her candid descriptions of her struggles as a survivor of sexual abuse, growing up with hardly any money, and amazed that she just refused to give up on life. As a result, she seems to be the better for it and she and Jeremy have produced a child prodigy that does more good for the world than most folks realize because, sadly, peeing in a mop bucket is more newsworthy than befriending young children with cancer; go figure!

Since the book's focus is really about her surviving terrible and sometimes horrific things, it was an added treat for her to include tidbits about her son, many which were already known; however, these gems coming from Justin's mom are definitely more meaningful than hearing or reading about them third-hand, since she was there when they happened!

Also, by her writing about her son, it confirms many events that others have accurately described in their books (such asCathleen Falsani in her book"Belieber!: Fame, Faith, and the Heart of Justin Bieber").

Also, the reader may discover many things about Justin that I don't believe have been published before by a family member; however, I say that having not finished reading his second memoir ("Justin Bieber: Just Getting Started").

An Amazing Woman!

To be able to go through all that and still tough it out and do what was right for Justin is superhuman! I’m so happy that she was brave enough to share her story with the world. She is an example that EVERYONE should follow no matter who you are because of her grit and tenacity. Justin has turned out amazing and she should be an extremely proud mother!
