I really enjoyed listening to this one It had me captivated from the first chapter to the last. It has just enough of a military feel to it that this old vet can identify with some of the characters. I can't wait for more. Well Done Joshua!!

Great Sci-Fi book

Loved the characters in this book! And the story line really had me and kept me interested and intrigued.
These guys have to deal with one of them having his consciousness transferred into the computer right at the beginning of the story and keeping from being caught by corporations and governments.
This is a fun ride that takes you all over.
I would say more but I don't want to give away any spoilers.
It's not LitRPG, but if you like that genre, like I do, I'm pretty sure you're going to love this book.
A Sci-fi thrill ride.
Done and Gilliland do a great job.

My fist book by Joshua Done

Did you read the Bobiverse and want more? Well here it is! One key difference that I loved: instead of a single powerful AI this one has a crew of humans working with him, including his best friend. It added a layer of dynamic that I loved! A light read with a whirlwind romp off earth and into a hostile space. Loved it!

Bobiverse fans delight!

I have been reading physical science fiction books my whole life and have recently been drawn to their audiobook counterparts. What Oblivion Engine brings to the table is a great story that throws you into the action right off the bat while using the action to endear you to the characters.

The way that you meet new characters is reminiscent of 1980s action movies, but then it develops character like the classic plots of great science fiction. A LOT happens in the early part of the book, but it happens in a way that is very organic and doesn't feel forced. It feels like a 10 book series but reads like a collection of short stories about the same characters. There is an entire universe full of characters, lore, and story that is waiting to be discovered here!

I want to keep the review short and spoiler free because I want you to give it a listen.

The narrator does an excellent job of voicing the characters and even uses some voice effects to further separate the different characters. Normally, I listen to audiobooks at about 1.5 speed but his voice is engaging and animated enough that I only sped it up to about 1.2. Dramatic pauses and space between sentences seem to be the norm with audiobooks, and I appreciate that it isn't the case here.

Overall, I loved it and if you are a fan of the genre than Oblivion Engine won't disappoint!

When are we getting a sequel?

My elevator pitch synopsis: Through an unlikely series of events two friends manage to develop technology that marks them as targets of greedy local governments, they must turn to extreme measures to maintain their freedom. I really enjoyed this story. It's a very fast paced, fun sci-fi romp. It's the creamier side of sci-fi without a focus on hard numbers and science, and I don't consider that a negative. It's an engaging story that kept me entertained, ends with a satisfying conclusion that I don't feel is an annoying gotcha cliffhanger moment, but also sets things up for a good follow up story. Looking forward to more, definitely recommended.

Sequel when!?

The story blasts off fast and doesn't let up, and while the story and settings are top-notch, it's the fun characters that keep readers flipping pages or audiobook listeners tuning it. If you've ever imagined what you and your buddy would do if suddenly granted super AI powers and an assortment of other sci fi goodies, this story plays it out.

Beginning with some madcap comedic elements, about a third of the way in the author plays things more like a straight sci fi adventure, but the characters never lose their charm. The story's got a libertarian bent, so expect bureaucratic bad guys - the worst sort - which persist even when our heroes take to the stars.

Those aliens won't know what hit em.

Aliens, AI and bureaocrats!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Great characters. It was fast-paced and well thought out. I'd highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys hard science fiction. I don't know if there will be a second book, but I'd grab it up. This one does warrant a second or third listen.
