About this listen

“Utterly captivating. What a lovely summer novel!”—Elin Hilderbrand, New York Times bestselling author

On Gin Lane encapsulates the very best of historical fiction.”—Fiona Davis, New York Times bestselling author

After her fiancé whisks her off to the glistening shores of Southampton in June of 1957, one young socialite begins to realize that her glamorous summer is giving her everything—except what she really wants—in this new novel from the author of Summer Darlings.

Everleigh “Lee” Farrows thinks she finally has life all figured out: a handsome fiancé named Roland, a trust in her name, and a house in Bronxville waiting for her to fill it with three adorable children. That is, until Roland brings her out to the Hamptons for a summer that will change everything.

Most women could only dream of the engagement present Roland unexpectedly bestows on Lee—a beachside hotel on the prized Gin Lane—but Lee’s delight is clouded by unpleasant memories of another hotel, the Plaza, where she grew up in the shadow of her mother’s mental illness. Shaking off flashbacks, Lee resolves to dive into an unforgettable summer with poolside Bellinis, daily tennis matches, luncheons with her Manhattan circle, and her beloved camera in tow. But when tragedy strikes on the hotel’s opening weekend, the cracks in Lee’s picture-perfect future slowly begin to reveal themselves, and Lee must look deep within herself to determine if the life she’s always wanted will ever truly be enough.

From the regal inns to the farmland, the well-heeled New Yorkers to the Bohemian artists, the East End of Long Island is a hodge-podge of the changing American landscape in the late 1950s—and the perfect place for Lee to discover who she really is.

On gin lane review

I absolutely loved this book! I grew up on Long Island & know many of the places the author referenced to. A great story! I loved reading about how the main character ever Leigh came into her own that summer. I highly recommend.

Get physical Copy!!

Do yourself a favor and do not get the audio version of this well written and interesting summer read. The narration was truly unbearable. The narrator is robotic and her character voices are nothing short of atrocious. I have never left a bad review, but I felt the responsibility preventing another from this terrible experience. I hate leaving anything unfinished and I have to say I liked the storyline and characters. To the author: perhaps have another narrator, re record this reading.

Worst Robotic Narration

I’m only into the second chapter and can tell I’ll like the story. However, this narration is the most ridiculous robotic sounding I’ve ever experienced with Audible (I've listened to nearly 280 titles). Someone else commented the horrible narration but I bought it anyway. I might need to grab the book because the narration is interfering with the story.
Update... I finished the book. The book was good but the narration continued to disrupt the listening experience. BUY THE BOOK, DON'T LISTEN..

Amazing Story. Painful Narration.

I LOVED this book. LOVED it. I am actually listening to it again because I loved it so much. The narration is atrocious. I can say, that if you give it a little bit and don’t think about it, it becomes tolerable. I loved the characters and the whole story. It really takes you there. If you can’t handle the narration (understandable), get a written copy! GREAT summer read!

Summer Read

The author writes of a young woman’s journey to find love and passion in a time when women were often dismissed and diminished. The story was placed in 1957, coincidentally the year I was born. Cheers for feminism and Starling !

OK Beach Read

Story line was suspenseful, but sing-song cadence of reader detracted from overall enjoyment of the novel.

Reader distracted from a good story

Great fun story ruined by a terrible reader!! A different reader would help---One that doesn't have a monotone, robotic, staccato voice.....

Terrible narration!!

I finally quit this book. The narrator is terrible!Did she get paid to do this?? I feel so bad for the author that her seemingly good book has been butchered. The narrator’s voice is whiny, choppy, and with barely any inflection, and the sentences have no flow because of it. There is no delineation of the characters. I held on as long as I could before giving up. I’ve never written a scathing review such as this before, but this was hard to believe. If I was the author I would beg for a re-recording. A shame! I’m sorry I had to pay to listen. What a waste. This narrator needs another line of work. And Audible another narrator.
