About this listen

In 1941, WWII begins for the United States, and life will never be the same for three women as they send their husbands, brothers, and friends off to war.

Ruth, a young wife and teacher, Lilly her teenage sister-in-law, and Helen, a British war bride, learn to cope with rationing, change, fear, loss, humiliation, and brutality while they forge an impenetrable bond and grow to be stronger than any of them ever dreamed possible. They lean on each other for support, aided by the family and friends who surround them, but when one decides to go to the front lines as part of the American Red Cross Clubmobile program, how can they cope with her absence - and more telegrams reporting loss?

Challenges of living on the home front

The Audible reader of Barb Warner Deane’s novel, On the Homefront, helps bring the characters to life, effectively conveying the spectrum of their emotions, such as fear, anguish, and joy, as well as capturing their age, gender, and accent.

The novel convincingly illustrates the many challenges of living on the home front during World War II and also gives us glimpses of the places where men fought the war and brave women supported them. The story focuses on three young women, Ruth, Helen, and Lilly, who serve as a sisterhood, giving one another strength and encouragement. This is an endearing story, and I was touched by the courage and perseverance of these women.

Captivating characters

This book really kept my interest. I finished it in two days. More than that, I connected with the characters so much that I wish there was a second epilogue, to tell me even more about their lives after the war. The story wraps up nicely and I’m not dissatisfied, but I’m invested enough in the women to want to hear more. It was a great insight into life during the war. I wasn’t born yet, so I enjoyed getting to live through a few different perspectives.

A great World War 2 Story with romance

The author takes her listeners back in time to see what happens during World War 2 , when the husbands leave for war and the wives are left behind to keep the home fires burning . It's about how several women survived the war by keeping their husbands spirits up through writing sweet love letters , taking care of their family and friends . and finding ways to honor their country . Working in the aircraft engine factory , running a daycare , and helping out the ' American Red Cross " . It has some sweet romance , suspense , tragedy . and a message about god .
A great World War 2 audio book to add to one's audio book collection .

.
The narrator did a great job with the different accents and acting out the other cast of characters .
This book played out more like a movie because of the great job the narrator did .
Out Standing !

A family during war

Most of us weren't even alive yet when the world was at war. We need to look back and learn from history. Our world cannot survive if history repeats itself. We must start thinking that we are world citizens instead of being divided by race and nationality. We need to start caring for our families, our communities and our world That is what the family in this book did They supported and cared for each other

Wonderful historic novel about women during WWII

The story mostly takes place in rural upstate NY. The story revolves around several women who support the men they love, while the men are away at war in Europe and Asia. Loved the interactions of the characters. They experienced turmoil, love, friendship, happiness, rationing, taking on jobs at a plant making military gear. So well written and the story just draws you in. There were a number of unexpected twists, just as in real life. One part had me crying out loud while driving my car. Loved the ending. Thanks to the author for a wonderful reading experience.

I've edited this review because I give 5 stars to a book when I find that I need to tell other people about the book. I'm finding that I'm telling more and more people about it so I upped the star count from a 4 to a 5.
