About this listen

Grace has taken care of her widowed father her entire adult life and the ornery old goat has finally died. She has no job, no skills and very little money, and has heard her father's prediction that no decent man would ever want her so often she accepts it as fact.

But she does have a big old house on Lawyers Row in Peacock, Tennessee. She opens a rooming house and quickly gathers a motley crew of tenants: Promise, Grace's best friend since kindergarten, who's fighting cancer; Maxie, an aging soap opera actress who hasn't lost her flair for the dramatic; Jonah, a sweet, gullible old man with a crush on Maxie.

And Dillon, Grace's brother's best friend, who stood her up on the night of her senior prom and has regretted it ever since. Dillon rents Grace's guest house for the summer and hopes to make up for lost time and past hurts - but first, he'll have to convince Grace that she's worth loving....

I Praise this Author

This author took on a very complicated project that included several important issues that in themselves would be difficult to write about and do it well. Ms. Flaherty has done this brilliantly.

She has created strong characters who experience challenges and face them with humor as well as bravery.

A book that could have been depressing is in fact extremely entertaining.

I highly recommend this one.

5 STARS!!

Any additional comments?

This book came alive for me, I became friends with these characters. The author runs the gamut through all the emotions. I Howled with laughter, and sobbed rivers of tears, felt fear and anguish. It truly became a 3D book for me. I loved it and highly recommend it, although I do caution that reading it in public might elicit a few curious glances.

Thank you, Rebecca Gibel!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Since I wrote this story, it's natural that I love it, but I was newly thrilled to hear it in someone else's voice. What a voice it was. She nailed the characters as well as if she'd written them.

What about Rebecca Gibel’s performance did you like?

She became the people and I was lost. I found myself surprised at what happened next, because the story became hers when she told it.

beautiful

This was an exquisite love story with multiple levels of life's strife, appealing, sympathetic characters, and a well developed story. Much deserved praise for the author.

A Lovely Story of Life, Love and Family

When I purchased One More Summer, Liz Flaherty’s characters pulled me in right away and I felt like a guest at the Elliot house.

The story’s theme is of building a family, whether biological or not, to love and be loved by right back. The reader gets to know and experience the quirky characters’ growth through life’s daily challenges, its most terrible events and its unexpected, wonderful moments of joy. Put on your most comfy robe, pull up a porch swing, grab a glass of wine and enjoy this beautiful story.

I think this is my favourite book this year

I cried, more than once, listening to this. The story is bittersweet, and also so beautiful.

The writer did an amazing job. So amazing I decided to write my first audible review even.

Not what I was expecting, but still very good

This novel was in the romance category and is produced by Harlequin. The cover art even makes it looks like your typical romance novel. (Not ragging on romances -- I love them!) Anyway, part of why I enjoy the romance genre is for the escapism, the scenes of falling in love, and the guaranteed happily-ever-after! My life can be kinda stressful and that HEA is not always in sight, if you know what I am saying...
Well, this story was not, in my opinion, in that genre. It is the story of Grace Elliot, the youngest child in a very disfunctional family. Her older siblings were the "perfect" ones and she was the messed up one. She was even stood up for the prom by her brother's best friend, Dillon. The story begins with Dillon walking back into her life, not long after her abusive father has died. The story plays out over the next year with health problems, secrets being revealed, breakups, marriages, and lots of angst. Still, I LOVED IT! Rebecca Gibel's narration added so much to the story and I obsessively listened to it over 4 days. I cried in several parts and felt frankly spent when it was over. I really came to care for Grace and the family that she made for herself.
So, if you are looking for something light, this might not be for you, but if you are looking for a story that will really draw you in, give it a chance.

Can you say TEARJERKER?

Can you say tear-jerker?!! This book just pulled on my heartstrings over and over again. It is very well-written and full of layers, but boohoo how happy-sad and sad-sad and devastating at times. I loved all the love and friendship everyone experienced. The friendship between Grace and Promise was inspiring and beautiful, because let's face it, some of our friends ARE our soulmates!

Get your tissues ready

This one is more of a tear-jerker and sweet romance story. Sweet, PG-13, with plenty of southern flare to it.
