About this listen

“Davidson’s latest novel is her best work yet. One Small Sacrifice is a fast-paced winner. Highly recommended.” - #1 New York Times bestselling author Harlan Coben

“Twisty, absorbing, and deeply humane, it’s a thriller you won’t want to miss.” - New York Times bestselling author Megan Abbott

NYPD detective Sheryn Sterling has had her eye on Alex Traynor ever since his friend Cori fell to her death under suspicious circumstances a year ago. Cori’s death was ruled a suicide, but Sheryn thinks Alex - a wartime photojournalist suffering from PTSD - got away with murder.

When Alex’s fiancée, Emily, a talented and beloved local doctor, suddenly goes missing, Sheryn suspects that Alex is again at the center of a sticky case. Sheryn dislikes loose ends, and Cori’s death had way too many of them.

But as Sheryn starts pulling at the threads in this web, her whole theory unravels. Everyone involved remembers the night Cori died differently - and the truth about her death could be the key to solving Emily’s disappearance.

Good story...

...considering it’s all based on lies, manipulation and miscommunication. The narrator for the female cop is TERRIBLE at male voices - they sound creepy and just wrong. The main character Alex gets annoying at some point because his overblown sense of responsibility starts to appear more like narcissism.
But overall it was written well with decent characterization. You won’t be bored.

Suspenseful! and Amazing Full Cast Narration!

This was my first Hilary Davidson's book, and won't be my last. This is the first book in the Shadows of New York, a suspenseful police procedural Series. The characters are great!: Alex, a photojournalist who suffers from PTSD; Emily, a doctor, volunteers with Doctors Without Borders; Sheryn, an NYPD detective, and Rafael, her partner. The secondary characters are intriguing, and they have an important part in this story. The storyline is fast-paced, suspenseful, and filled with mystery, secrets, and twists and turns. The intrigue unfolds at a great pace. The full cast narration is really well done. Natalie Naudus, Lacy Laurel, Joe Hempel and Mark Turetsky did a wonderful job with the narration. I enjoyed it. Looking forward to listen to the next book in the Series, Don't Look Down.

This was an intriguing book

I really enjoyed this book. The story was good & it kept me guessing. The direction of the story isn't exactly clear at first but develops at a good pace. Loved the characters. The narrators did a great job on this one. Thumbs up!

Another hit from Hillary

Great book. Intense, satisfying story. Only problem was the Sharon narration. Excellent story—complicated, conflictive, and characteristic of a great mystery.

Good Story Narration Was Disappointment

I would give this a 3.5 * The overall story was good. Obviously there was really good character development for Alex but I felt everyone else felt flat. I wanted more about Emily & Sharon and Cory & Will. I didn’t get invested, attached or dislike anyone really enough. Twists just happened. And unfortunately the narration was a detriment. Yes it should be mood reflective but it lulled me instead of made me emotive. And if a female cannot narrate a male well she just shouldn’t. Hopefully the next one in the series is better.

Too Bad One of the Narrators is Horrible

This is narrated by multiple people. One of the female narrators is so bad that she nearly ruins the entire story. She’s nasal, effects a ridiculous low male voice, and says, “He said,” “She asked,” etc. as though they are sentenced unto themselves with no sense of normal transition.

disappointing as audio

Like many of the other reviews, the story was good, kept interest. However, the narration was horrible. the voice for the character "Alex" was the only one I enjoyed. The others didn't fit the characters, were poorly narrated in regards to tone and inflection. The whispering, airy voices were way off base. Thankfully, Alex's viewpoint were many of the chapters so I was able to get through it. I would recommend getting the kindle or paper version.

Simple is better

Really enjoyed the story and character development was great but sometimes the voices just didn't seem to fit. Worst was Rafael. He sounded like a cheap prostitute, not a detective!
