Publisher's summary

Homicide detective Frost Easton doesn't like coincidences. When a series of bizarre deaths rock San Francisco - as seemingly random women suffer violent psychotic breaks - Frost looks for a connection that leads him to psychiatrist Francesca Stein. Frankie's controversial therapy helps people erase their most terrifying memories...and all the victims were her patients.

As Frost and Frankie carry out their own investigations, the case becomes increasingly personal - and dangerous. Long-submerged secrets surface as someone called the Night Bird taunts the pair with cryptic messages pertaining to the deaths. Soon Frankie is forced to confront strange gaps in her own memory, and Frost faces a killer who knows the detective's worst fears.

As the body count rises and the Night Bird circles ever closer, a dedicated cop and a brilliant doctor race to solve the puzzle before a cunning killer claims another victim.

Definitely a great choice for Audible!

A serial killer is getting inside of the head's of his victim, causing them to live their worst fears/memories and then die/kill themselves. A detective, a kind of shady female shrink, and a young girl who just witnessed the suicide of her best friend are all in a race to track down "The Night Bird" before he can strike again. Definitely worth an audio listen if you want to hear some creepy, eeerie sounds.

Accent

I liked the narrator for the most part. His accent was terrible and inconsistent sometimes the character would have an accent and sometimes not.

Great story with terrible narrator

The story was interesting from beginning to end with a psychological bent that left me with a sense of "what if". But the narrators alter egos were ridiculously overplayed, to the point of being comical. They all sounded the same too. U would think the narrator knew nothing about accent or tone variation. But the story was still worth listening to even with the unfavorable narration.

Not my favorite of Brian's Books

I have listened to 2 other stories by thus author that were AMAZING. This one did not grip me the same way that the others did. it was just alright, felt slow moving to me. I listened out of curiosity for what was going to happen not because I was on the edge of my seat. It was not bad, it just wasn't my favorite. In fact, by the time I got to the end of the story I was only vaguely listening. It was just ok and I'm glad that I got it on sale, I might've been mad if I had used a credit or paid full price. I do recommend this author, just not necessarily this book.

Wow!

If you could sum up The Night Bird in three words, what would they be?

Suspenseful
Twisty
Creepy (in the best way!)

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Oh yes! So many twists & turns.

Have you listened to any of Joe Barrett’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I don't believe I had.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

**Possible Spoiler** When things seemed over but there was still an hour left... I wondered what else could possibly fill an hour... that is when I got the most enraptured with the story!

Any additional comments?

This was my first Brian Freeman and I'll definitely be seeking out others! Best story I've read in a long time. Definitely recommending to other people I know, and plan to re-listen to this in the future! Well done!

Great story - Just don’t use earphones

Brian Freeman is one of my favorites and this one continues a string of great stories. Just one huge misfire - the narrator uses loud screeches that cannot be anticipated and can burst your eardrum. The narrator is very good but he could have emphasized using an undertone instead of this ear splitting volume. There was no way to adjust my earphones so I could hear at a normal level yet protect myself against the frequent sound bursts.

Great book

Good story and narration, but at some points the reader's volume went too loud. The story brings up some interesting stuff about memory and ways of handling bad memories.

Really good!

I love all of Freeman’s books, and this is another great one. It’s also extra fun for me, because I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, so I know every spot the books talks about. I can picture everything. I love it! I’ll definitely be reading the rest on this series. :)
