About this listen

A woman pushed to the breaking point by a stalker develops an obsession of her own in this shocking new novel of psychological suspense from the acclaimed author of The Perfect Son.

Jenna is a wife, a mother, a doctor. She’s also the victim of a stalker. Frightening "gifts" are left on her doorstep, her home is broken in to, and when she leaves her house to take her children to school, he’s waiting. She feels powerless, and the police are unable to help.

Then her stalker is brought into the emergency room after a terrible accident, and Jenna has to treat the man who’s been tormenting her for months. With her stalker in a coma, Jenna is desperate to understand the life of this seemingly normal man. When she finds startling images on his phone, she is consumed by her need for answers - and her own obsession leads her down a twisting path of destruction.

Just how far is Jenna willing to go to take back control of her life?

“The lives of two troubled women intertwine in this unsettling psychological thriller....A nice see-sawing of emotions and motives will keep most readers guessing to the end. North remains a writer to watch.” (Publishers Weekly)

I loved the suspense …. It built up just enough to keep you hanging after every chapter. The only issue for me was the narrator when she portrayed the children. So nasally that it was disturbing. The other characters were done flawlessly.

Good listen!

I was oblivious to some of the little details and the end just tied everything together. I gasped at the truth. Fun book but kind of slow to take.

Big twist

The book was full of suspense, but the story was so unrealistic and crazy at times.

Suspenseful

This was an entertaining listen. I did somewhat know what was happening and did guess before the end but it was still worth the listen. It was entertaining enough to keep my attention and interest. Something to listen to while cooking, cleaning etc.

I revisited "One Step Behind" two years after my initial listen, and this audiobook truly delivered as a suspenseful thriller. This time around, I made a conscious effort to listen intently, and it paid off. I learned a valuable lesson: Don’t rush through a complex story or you might miss crucial details. My initial lack of attention led to confusion, and I found myself backtracking to catch what I had missed. This time, I was fully immersed in the story, and it was a much more enjoyable experience. Lauren North's creativity shines in this gripping tale of a stalker's obsession and its far-reaching consequences. With twisty turns, surprises and just the right amount of creep factor, this story is a welcome addition to my favorite, psychological suspense genre. The story follows Jenna, a devoted wife, mother and doctor, who's being stalked by a seemingly normal man. Feeling powerless and frustrated with the lack of help from the police, Jenna's world is turned upside-down when her stalker is brought into the emergency room after an accident. As Jenna delves deeper into his world, she discovers disturbing secrets, unleashing her own destructive obsession. The line between victim and perpetrator blurs, and I was left wanting more. Alex Dunmore's narration is spot-on, bringing the story to life with the precise balance of suspense and intrigue. The combination of North's writing and Dunmore's narration is a perfect pairing. With its twisty turns, surprises and just the right amount of creep factor, this offering is a must-have. Recommended? Indeed!

A second chance proves a wise choice

Well-paced plot with complex interconnected characters. I always find children’s voices annoying but other than that the narrator’s performance was great.

Kept me guessing

Jenna, a doctor, has been stalked for the past year. She finds disturbing things left on her doorstep and is beyond frustrated because the local DS on the case hasn’t come up with any leads despite all the clues. When the suspect ends up in Jenna’s A&E she must treat him which goes against her current instincts. With him recovering in the hospital Jenna can finally catch her breath knowing the threat is gone. Or is it?

Lauren North’s novel kept me guessing who the culprit was as I learned more about Jenna and the people in her life. I enjoyed it and look forward to North’s next book. Recommended to fans of domestic and psychological suspense.
Alix Dunmore did a fine job with narration.

Psychological suspense

The story is pretty decent and I enjoyed it overall but the children’s voices are so nasal and so irritating and unnecessary it definitely distracts from the story. Predictable ending but it’s nice to put on while you cool or do a task and don’t want something you have to pay super close attention to

Not bad except the kids voices

I don’t regret the purchase, but something about the storyline is a little….off? I can’t put my finger on it. But decent twist. I think maybe it’s character depth I am missing? Worth the listen though.

It was good.
