Publisher's summary

Explore the power of myth as it flowered in Asia

In this second volume of The Masks of God - Joseph Campbell’s major work of comparative mythology - the preeminent mythologist looks at Asian mythology as it developed over the course of five thousand years into the distinctive religions of Egypt, Mesopotamia, India, China, and Japan.

The Masks of God is a four-volume study of world religion and myth that stands as one of Joseph Campbell’s masterworks. On completing it, he wrote: “Its main result for me has been the confirmation of a thought I have long and faithfully entertained: of the unity of the race of man, not only in its biology, but also in its spiritual history, which has everywhere unfolded in the manner of a single symphony, with its themes announced, developed, amplified and turned about, distorted, reasserted, and today, in a grand fortissimo of all sections sounding together, irrestibly advancing to some kind of mighty climax, out of which the next great movement will emerge.”

Campbell is just amazing.

I have never been disappointed by a Joseph Campbell work. They just make you smarter, more well rounded humans. Enjoy this series as I have. The narrator is very good for the material.

Almost

The information presented was groundbreaking for its time, but more than a bit dated in understanding. It's still a good intro to the topic for those interested, just not a great foundation upon which to form specific opinions.

Narrated by a cartoon character

And that's not a good thing. The content is intriguing but holy crap, this guy needs a new gig, he's hands down the worst narrator I've ever listened to.

droopy performs Joseph Campbell

You knows it's good when you don't care that the guy reading this often sounds exactly like Droopy from the old cartoons. At first, I asked myself, "why would they hire Droopy to read this book? " But eventually, the more important question boiled up in my frustration: "why would they not? "

This is a great piece of world literature

This is a great piece of world literature. I highly recommend it. The performance of the recording is too quality. Campbell is one of my favorite authors.

Outstanding!

The second in Joseph Campbells series The Masks Of God thoroughly covers Far Eastern evolutions of spirituality. I found the sections on Buddhist theology to be my fave but the entire book is indispensable. I suggest listening to all of them in the series along with his many other works.

The problem with the narrator

I love Joseph Campbells works but often feel that the voice in his lectures is so much more able to capture what is the essence. The narrator chosen here and in some other books from the foundation lacks the clarity and tonage. In this case better to buy the actual book itself not audio.
