When a DNA test blows apart her father’s hidden identity many years after his death, Deb finds she has a sister, Barbara, and an entirely new family she never knew. As the sisters work to unravel more of their father’s secrets, they find his connection to a dark chapter of British-Canadian history. Will the sisters finally get to the bottom of their father’s past? Or are some secrets meant to stay buried forever?

From BBC Studios, the producers of hits such as Stalked and To Catch a Scorpion as well as Audible Originals Mother, Neighbor, Russian Spy and I Am Not Nicholas comes Orphan Smith: My Father’s Secret, a gripping seven-part series that follows a daughter’s search for the truth.

Pace was a bit slow on delivering the info. Had to speed up 1.5. However, the delivery was compassionate and nurturing in the way narrated and that human interaction was very deliberate.

Awareness on the issue of the children’s welfare from that time period.

I cried through all the listening. This unknown history of cruelty and survival really surprised me.

Heart rendering.

This is an account of my family’s story. No one could have done it better! Thank you Fiona and Turi. Deb Kornrumpf

The extent of the research

I’m an amateur genealogist so I was inspired by the untangling of this family’s tree. The main sister, Deb, was very relatable. Her and her sister’s emotions as they learned new information sounded real. I think what I had a problem with was the production and the way it was edited. Between the authentic dialog were long pauses, suspenseful music and overly dramatic narration, like, “and this was just the tip of the iceberg..”. Without the unnecessary filler, this would probably be half as long, but perhaps that’s the point.

Interesting, but drawn out story

Enjoyed 'hearing' from the different characters in their own voices as much as possible. Loved the main narrator's calm non-judgemental delivery.

It was a gripping story, well-paced and compelling, like a book you can’t put down. Very well-researched and dealt with the subject matter and the family members interviewed in a very sensitive manner. I personally found the violin score to be just a hair too much in places, but that’s minor. The whole series was really well-done and I was on the edge of my seat the entire listen to find out what happened next. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in genealogy, family history and/or historical events that deserve more public attention.

Moving story, compelling storytelling and a tragic chapter in history that needs to be brought into the light

loved this story! I was adopted when I was 2 days old and it was so fun searching for my own history and knowing how the reward feels once you do discover the information.

really well written

Love the way it switches between a personal story, a historical travesty, and contemporary repercussions, interspersed with intriguing snippets of what is to come.

This series is brilliant!

A piece of history that I had heard rumors of but this was a detailed personal story. The program not only impacted the youth, but generations that followed.

Very interesting
