Twenty-five years ago, a local girl went missing. Now, another girl comes back…

When five-year-old Elsie Button was snatched from a garden in a sleepy town on the Welsh island of Anglesey, and a local man later confessed, it sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community. How could one of their own do such a thing? Especially when his own little girl was the same age – and the victim's best friend.

Kathryn and her family left under the cloak of darkness one night, unable to bear the shame, and the anger of their neighbours. She hardly remembers that time. Now, she suffers the consequences of living under an assumed name, always looking over her shoulder. Her dad has not spoken a word to her since he went to prison. She is haunted by the question: why did he kill Elsie?

When another child is taken from the same garden, twenty-five years to the day of Elsie's murder, Kathryn is determined that this time she'll be on the right side. She'll join the search and atone for her father's deed, and maybe, just maybe, get the answers she wants. But she's not prepared for the long memory of the locals, nor the risks of going back. Not everyone on the island wants the truth to come out, and they'll go to extreme lengths to stop that from happening.

A gripping must-listen psychological thriller from the #1 bestselling author Jenny Blackhurst. Unmissable for fans of K. L. Slater, C. L. Taylor and S. E. Lynes.

...I hate the ending. I don't hate the answer to the mystery, but I hate how the situation is treated. Unfortunately, I can't really voice my grievances without giving the answer away or giving hints I don't want to, so I'll leave it at that, I guess. I loved the story right up until the last couple of chapters because I don't agree with the blame that is apportioned.

Very Good, But...

Plot twist I never saw coming

The story does not move very fast and yet I remained completely engaged in the storyline. I was impressed with how well the author tells this story and the narration is great. My only complaint would be (not a spoiler but after you read it you'll know what I mean) that I think Patrick (and his friends) made a really - really stupid choice. But even that is told well! I finished this book then found another of hers (The Hiking Trip) to download and it is even better!

Great story and narration

I appreciated the story. The narration was excellent. The twist and turns were wonderfully surprising. I cared about the characters. I think that’s all one can hope for in a book. Well done.

Clever & Interesting

This was a good mystery with a couple twists. I usually can figure out too easily who "dun it". That wasn't really the case here at all. It was an easy listen while still being interesting. I recommend.

I stumbled upon this and decided to give it a go. It was serendipitous. The mystery has a brilliant twist and the narration is probably one of the best I have ever experienced. Five stars plus! ⭐️

Gripping storyline out of this world narration.

Tremendous story of sacrifice although I am not sure if it was realistic but good story all in all. Narrator was great and it was hard to stop listening to.
