About this listen

Winner of the 2018 Green Book Festival Award for General Nonfiction, the 2018 New York Book Festival Award for General Nonfiction, and the 12th Annual National Indie Excellence Award for Environment.

Our current environmental crises - most notably, climate change - call on us to upgrade to a new way of life that will sustain us and our world far into the future.

When you listen to this timely, accessible, and thought-provoking book, you will discover:

  • We already have the capacities and tools to create a health and environmental revolution
  • Specific actions you and I can take now that will help us and our world prosper - not just in the future, but immediately
  • How the strategies shared in this book can uplift our society and democracy
  • Why creating a high-tech and high-nature way of life could spark an economic boom

Our scarcest resource is time. With determination and action, we can implement solutions rather than sit on the sidelines suffering harmful impacts. We deserve, and can have, better health and a cleaner environment, a stable climate, healthy ecosystems, sustainable use of resources, and less need for damage control. We have so much to gain. Through science and stories, Our Earth, Our Species, Our Selves makes the case for hope, optimism, and practical solutions we can take individually and collectively to green our technology, green our economy, strengthen our democracy, and create social equality.

Our Earth, Our Species, Our Selves will empower you to know we can meet our challenges and inspire you to take effective actions you'll want to take.

A nice summary of ways to try to move ahead

I'm torn on this book. Essentially, there isn't much wrong with what is said. Doing the things Moyer prescribes would certainly help us live more sustainable and possibly even better lives. My issue though is that it's a overly simplistic view and in no ways takes into account the realities of how people are. She just says, if we act better, then we can do this.
Despite the examples of successful movements and leadership in the past, we don't have a great track record, as a group, in doing the right thing. The book takes a very broad brush in painting a future where we could succeed in living sustainably. If we get more involved, lead a movement to force government to act, boycott businesses to force better behavior, then voila - we will be well on our way.
Sorry, not that easy. I agree that we should try, regardless how tough it is and despite a big chance that we could fail, I just think it is way more difficult than Moyer makes it out to be.
