About this listen

In This Changes Everything Naomi Klein argues that climate change isn’t just another issue to be neatly filed between taxes and health care. It’s an alarm that calls us to fix an economic system that is already failing us in many ways. Klein meticulously builds the case for how massively reducing our greenhouse emissions is our best chance to simultaneously reduce gaping inequalities, re-imagine our broken democracies, and rebuild our gutted local economies. She exposes the ideological desperation of the climate-change deniers, the messianic delusions of the would-be geoengineers, and the tragic defeatism of too many mainstream green initiatives. And she demonstrates precisely why the market does not - and cannot - fix the climate crisis, but will instead make things worse, with ever more extreme and ecologically damaging extraction methods, accompanied by rampant disaster capitalism.

Klein argues that the changes to our relationship with nature and one another that are required to respond to the climate crisis humanely should not be viewed as grim penance, but rather as a kind of gift - a catalyst to transform broken economic and cultural priorities and to heal long-festering historical wounds. And she documents the inspiring movements that have already begun this process: communities that are not just refusing to be sites of further fossil fuel extraction but are building the next, regeneration-based economies right now.

Can we pull off these changes in time? Nothing is certain. Nothing except that climate change changes everything. And for a very brief time, the nature of that change is still up to us.

What a time for a golden anniversary. Celebrated annually since 1970, Earth Day commemorates its 50th year of existence as the world faces an unprecedented global crisis. While this particular Earth Day won't be filled with parades, communal beach cleanups, and school field trips to plant trees, fear not: when there's a will to honor the environment, there's a way. Inspire your inner environmentalist by listening to some of our favorite earth-loving audio.

Climate activism

This book is really interesting. It chronicles the different activities going on in the climate change movement. She argues strongly that we cannot rely on modern technologies to help us retain our current levels of consumption. It is important that we reduce consumption if our planet must be healed. Her book also makes me rethink strongly the role played by some big environmental groups. I was shocked that such a group was engagde in oil drilling in places that need protection. A pro environmental group has no business drilling oil, period! Klein challenges each one of us to take steps towards reducing our carbon footprint; and like our ancestors who fought to end slavery, we must fight to protect our environment from businesses and governments who feel they must do everything to ensure economic growth. I strongly recommend this book.

Reader was distracting

The book and its content are amazing! A must-read for everyone. I bought the print edition to read over and over. The only thing I didn't like was the reader. She was incredibly distracting when she read quotes by men in a "man's voice." It would have been 100 times better had she just read them normally.

A bit biased o think, ots coz people back then who’se land was taken wasnt taken because they lost a capitalizt batter it was coz they didn’t have a stronger army... the climate va capitalism is on point but there’s other areas that foesn’t pertain to the issue on hand

Outstanding book!

One of the best books on the environment. Klein is the voice of reason in the sea of denial about global warming!

This Changes Everything

Very well written book loaded with examples which explains why we are headed towards devastation! However, there is a small window of time, if we do choose, to get it right.
