About this listen

After an accident on his way home from school, 17-year-old Joe Harding is locked out of his house. A stranger, who appears to own Joe's house, warns him to escape. Huge bells on rooftops ring out, and Joe is chased out of town by a band of citizens determined to kill him. He escapes, and after surviving alone in an England that is wild and uncultivated, joins a small band of young people in hiding. There, he falls passionately in love with Kathryn. He is in a parallel world in which he wants to remain, but fate has other things in store for him.

Out of Time is passionate, violent, and serves as a paradigm for our world and its present troubles.

Time out of time

I seriously love this story. It has everything that a great dystopian book needs. Survival, adventure, dynamic complex characters, love, betrayal, and a ton more.
Only think I disliked was the editing. It seemed a bit choppy making the audio seem a bit inconsistent. But over all it’s an amazingly captivating story! Worth the buy.

interesting

I love a time travel or alternate reality tale and this one is good.. it's a little simplified but the premise is solid and the characters very human. I wouldn't classify it as a new modern classic, but as an interesting way to pass some time travelling it works.

Don't waste your time.

What the author has going for them is a very good story idea. But that's it. One gets the feeling that about 3 or 4 books are being told in one, with never enough time or thought spent to capture the reader's attention and get them to "invest" in the characters, setting/world, or plot. They are not believable because we are never allowed to get to know them. Passive voice is used almost exclusively, always being told what happened and why, instead of shown. I almost always finish books, even if I am not really enjoying them. However, I quit this one about half-way through with no curiosity as to what was going to happen, and my only regret that I'd wasted my time with it that long.

Good idea with bad follow through

Would you try another book from Ruth Boswell and/or Staten Eliot?

No

What could Ruth Boswell have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Taken the underlying story line about the children the towns people and dropped all the undying love that added nothing.

What didn’t you like about Staten Eliot’s performance?

All the characters sounded the same.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Out of Time?

All the over the top undying love between two people who had just met.

Any additional comments?

I tend not to write reviews of books. I have read so many that are good to great. I felt the need to review this one as it was extremely hard to get through the 5 plus hours.
