About this listen

Theirs was a storybook romance - popular athlete Rodney Carr and pretty, talented, hard-to-pin-down Leah Monzano were pegged as a sure thing from the moment they appeared together at prom. After years of marriage, the world still sees them as a fairytale couple. But not everything is always happy ever after.

As Leah tries to square her ambitions and her own passions, she realizes her husband might have very different ideas about what love should be given and what love should be deserved. Just as she discovers this, she reconnects with Jared Bruce, a compassionate and brilliant photographer who's come a long way from his status as the "black nerd" in school. Loyal, kind, and tortured by the horrors he's seen as a wartime photographer, Jared can't quite conceal how long he's been carrying a torch for Leah, but would never make Leah even think of compromising her marriage.

A lot of things change, though, because of Rodney. When he crosses a line and shows zero remorse, Leah has some decisions to make. She's not in a position for too many people to believe her, but the situation is only getting worse. She'll be down to just a few friends, her wits, and a whole bunch of hard choices.

Should she put everything else on hold to focus on saving the marriage, putting everything into her body and their sex life to bring the spark back?

Should she box away the feeling she's discovered for the thoughtful, artistic man from her past who wants nothing more than to protect her?

Should she stop trying to have it perfect and realize that in all relationships you might just have to settle?

There's another option:

Should she enact the plan she's kept in reserve, the last-ditch escape plan that will ensure she can be free forever?

Love. Second chances. Revenge. Redemption. Outfoxed is a re-telling of a forgotten Grimm tale ("The Gossip Wolf and the Fox") for the modern age - with the heat and the intensity turned all the way up.

An Unusual Fairytale Retelling

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I really loved how the author made the characters so diverse and multi-faceted. And I had no idea it was a fairytale retelling - probably because it's based on a pretty obscure one! I really felt for Leah - her struggle to stay true to herself while maintaining her marriage (even when it may not be worth it). I also felt for Jared and waiting for their story to find resolution kept me listening. There were also several plot twists that I just didn't see coming that made the book very entertaining. The narration was good and I found that I was able to listen at normal speed when I've been listening to most books at 1.25x speed lately. All in all, I give the book 3.5 out of 5 wine glasses!

Did not do it for me.

Couldn't get into this book. Narration seemed very dry as did the story line. I tried several times to listen but kept falling asleep. “I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.”

Totally not what I expected (in a good way!)

Any additional comments?

When I first started this listen, I found myself getting upset because I couldn't take how weak Leah, the main female character, was. Boy, did I get outfoxed.

I won't give any more of the story away but if you can resist snatching your earbuds out or throwing your phone against the wall, it will be worth it.

There's a bit more sex in this book than I usually prefer but it wasn't gratuitous; it was necessary for the story. Again, totally worth it.

The narrator did a great job keeping the listen interesting. Actually, she was probably too good. Some of the POV from the husband was icky but the narrator made him incredibly believable.

I wasn't expecting this story. I love it when that happens.
