About this listen

With two million copies of his books sold worldwide, "world-class crime writer" (The Sunday Times, UK) Ragnar Jónasson brings us a chilling new standalone thriller with Outside.

Four friends. One night. Not everyone will come out alive . . .

When a deadly snowstorm strikes the Icelandic highlands, four friends seek shelter in a small, abandoned hunting lodge.

It is in the middle of nowhere and there's no way of communicating with the outside world.

They are isolated, but they are not alone . . .

As the night darkens, and fears intensify, an old tragedy gradually surfaces—one that forever changed the course of their friendship.

Those dark memories could hold the key to the mystery the friends now find themselves in.

And whether they will survive until morning . . .

I enjoyed this one with a few reservations. Interesting locale and set-up, good plot twists. I read criticisms of the ending as abrupt, but I thought it was fine. I think the narration of the last line left something to be desired (in timing and emphasis) and made it more abrupt than it would be in print.

Good twists, no problem with the ending

Bad writing and bad pronunciation as in 'Schadenfreude' . That is embarrassing. The man in the corner. Did anybody ever talk to him? Weird book. Would not recommend it.

Listen to this if you enjoy stories with incompetent characters that are entirely unlikeable. The ending is predictable and the suspense is tainted by totally illogical actions by our least favorite characters.

Good performance, terrible story

I tried listening to this and starting over. I normally love this author. This one didn’t click for me.

Too slow, I can’t finish.

The author was busy so he stopped the story. Felt disappointed. None of the characters were even like able. No one to root for.

Story was unfinished.

Have read Ragnar's other titles and was anticipating a similar satisfying experience. Even though this was an audible format, am likely to have had the same reaction to the printed material. I did not finish this.

Disappointing

I like books where the characters act reasonably - where their actions make sense. I found the ending of this book to be contrived with the characters thinking and acting irrationally, only in a way for the author to reach he desired conclusion. Just didn't do it for me.

Denouement left a lot to be desired....

I always wish his books were longer!
Because they are just soooo good.
This was an exceptionally well written mystery that has elements of suspense, isolation, paranoia, struggles with the natural world, internal conflict as well as conflict gone unresolved for far too long among friends who’ve know each other for years.
The other fantastic aspect of this one is that I never came close to predicted “who did it” or “what’s the real story behind the story?” Which I can almost always predict as I am an avid reader of this particular genre.
I never saw this coming, I never guessed the who or the why of it and I truly love when that happens.
Thank you RJ for yet another beautifully written book with well developed characters and creepy undertones that one can’t quite put a finger on all the way through.
The narration was also exceptional.
This is a true 5 ✨experience from the first page to the last.
Highly recommended.

Excellent

This book was awful all around with awful characters and no plot. I was so dissatisfied and disappointed. 😞
