About this listen

Everyone's invited...everyone's a suspect....

For fans of Ruth Ware and Tana French, a shivery, atmospheric, pause-resisting novel of psychological suspense in the tradition of Agatha Christie, in which a group of old college friends are snowed in at a hunting lodge...and murder and mayhem ensue.

All of them are friends. One of them is a killer.

During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of 30-something friends from Oxford meets to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students 10 years ago. For this vacation, they’ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands - the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves.

They arrive on December 30, just before a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world.

Two days later, on New Year’s Day, one of them is dead.

The trip began innocently enough: admiring the stunning if foreboding scenery, champagne in front of a crackling fire, and reminiscences about the past. But after a decade, the weight of secret resentments has grown too heavy for the group’s tenuous nostalgia to bear. Amid the boisterous revelry of New Year’s Eve, the cord holding them together snaps.

Now, one of them is dead...and another of them did it.

Keep your friends close, the old adage goes. But just how close is too close?

Dull, Unoriginal, Uninspired

If every member of the hunting party could have been killed off in the first few chapters, this would have been a more interesting book. (What unsympathetic, self indulgent, and one dimensional characters). The twist was just silly. Don’t waste your time or money.

Slow Start-Strong Finish

I really enjoyed the Wedding Party, so I gave this book a try. The beginning took a little more effort to get through than her other book, but midway through I was definitely engaged. I guessed the plot twists, but they were still good. The audio is great.

Good narration

I have no idea why Harper Audio decided to cast a brand new group of narrators for the US version of the book when they already had a stellar cast for the UK version. But saying that, what the UK version did not have was the Scots tones of Gary Furlong to give the book authenticity.

The story itself is one that has been done many times before, so I don't know why it is getting so much praise. We have a group of friends who have known one another since Uni who ritually spend the New Year together each year despite growing apart and resenting one another. And of course... there is a murder. The storyline is unoriginal but it was entertaining having lots of different narrators taking turns to read chapters.

Entertaining mystery!

I wasn’t sure about this story when I started but I really enjoyed finding out the mysteries surrounding each character. I also did not guess the ending reveal, which is rare for me! I would definitely recommend.

Keeps you guessing who dies

Loved this book! The author does not even tell you who is murdered until almost the end of the book. You also get to experience each person's perspectives through out the book!

took a while to get there

the author spends a lot of time explaining each character and their relationships. You get bits of the story line throughout. Then it all comes together. I really liked it about 1/2 way through. it was a decent listen

Glad I kept listening

The beginning of the story was a bit hard to hang on to but it was well worth it! Lots of twist and an unpredictable ending!
Narrators did a fantastic job!
