About this listen

In the fourth installment of The Black Knight Chronicles, Jimmy Black is having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day and a darned fine pity party, serving the finest alcohol, when a call from his not-quite-girlfriend-cop forces him to sober up and stare at jawbones.

"Cold case" takes on a whole new meaning when vampire detectives risk life and limbs (literally) to connect a series of decades-old kidnappings in Charlotte with current missing persons cases. All clues lead through the veil of Faerieland to the legendary Goblin's Market, a magical bazaar where anything is available - for a price.

The boys can barely stay out of trouble in Charlotte. As fresh meat at The Market, they'll be lucky to survive the day.

Jimmy and crew keep on blundering thru.

Where does Paint it Black rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Within the books of the "Black Knight Chronicles" themselves, last. Paint it Black is still a pretty good book, but the first and third books are better by a mile because Hard Day's Knight is world building and the Knight Moves introduced Abbey, who's a great character and shakes up the dynamic of the first 2 books in a good way (at least she does in Knight Moves, not so much in Paint It Black).

What did you like best about this story?

The Goblin Market reminded me of the Bazaar on Deeva in Myth Adventures

What does Nick J. Russo bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Mr. Russo is a good reader. He is easy and fun to listen to. I think if I read the stories for myself now, after listening to him for 4 books, I would probably still hear his voice in my head for most of the characters, especially for Jimmy.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did listen to it all in one day- the same day I got it. I do that a lot though, because I often listen to audio books at work on days when I am not interacting with clients. Did I want to? Yes. I wanted to see how Jimmy and crew would get out of the trouble they always find themselves in.

Any additional comments?

There were some things I really didn't like in this book. The Goblin Bazaar was very unpleasant. The killer was also very unpleasant. Maybe too unpleasant for my everyday reading, and since I was listening to this at work, I was very glad I was using headphones at least twice during the story. I also didn't like the direction of some of the character development, though that might turn into something interesting in later, I will have to see. I have listened to the first 3 books in the series multiple times. I doubt I will listen to this book again, and if so, not for a long time. I will be getting the fifth book in the series soon. I am hoping that it will return to the form of the previous books and that the series will not continue in this darker tone going forward.

good but weakest of the series

I enjoyed this book but it to me the weakest of the five in the series.
