About this listen

Anne Rice, creator of the Vampire Lestat, the Mayfair witches and the amazing worlds they inhabit, now gives us the first in a new series of novels linked together by the fledgling vampire David Talbot, who has set out to become a chronicler of his fellow Undead.

The novel opens in present-day Paris in a crowded café, where David meets Pandora. She is two thousand years old, a Child of the Millennia, the first vampire ever made by the great Marius. David persuades her to tell the story of her life. Pandora begins, reluctantly at first and then with increasing passion, to recount her mesmerizing tale, which takes us through the ages, from Imperial Rome to eighteenth-century France to twentieth-century Paris and New Orleans. She carries us back to her mortal girlhood in the world of Caesar Augustus, a world chronicled by Ovid and Petronius. This is where Pandora meets and falls in love with the handsome, charismatic, lighthearted, still-mortal Marius. This is the Rome she is forced to flee in fear of assassination by conspirators plotting to take over the city. And we follow her to the exotic port of Antioch, where she is destined to be reunited with Marius, now immortal and haunted by his vampire nature, who will bestow on her the Dark Gift as they set out on the fraught and fantastic adventure of their two turbulent centuries together.

Critic reviews

"TANTALIZING."--Library Journal

"SEDUCTIVE . . . [RICE] HAS RETURNED TO THE SOURCE OF HER BEST WORK, her sexy and invincible vampires. . . . Pandora is a superheroine: beautiful, of course, but also smart, fearless, independent, lusty, resourceful, and so pumped up at the end of her breathless narrative, she takes off for New Orleans, hot on the trail of Lestat and Marius."--Booklist

"EERILY VIBRANT . . . The title character is a highborn woman of Augustan Rome who later names herself after the Pandora of mythology, opening her own box of surprises. Sitting in a modern-day Paris café in the aftermath of a fresh kill, the vampire Pandora accepts the challenge of recounting her history and immediately sets to work, filling the blank pages of an elegant leatherbound notebook. . . . A wealth of narrative twists and period detail."--The New York Times Book Review

Great abridged version.

I made the mistake of thinking this audiobook was the full text. Great voice though.

Pandora is worth the listen

I loved this audio version of the book. Pandora is a favorite I have read and re read. I wanted to listen to it again and purchased so I could hear it while I worked. It was so good. Narration was so velvety and beautiful just as I imagined Pandoras voice to be. Well done.

Once Lydia, Now Pandora

I really enjoyed Janet McTeer's narration. Completely believable and I was able to see the story being told. Although very short, still entertaining. I liked it. I really did. I'd love to explore more of the love shared by Pandora and Marius. Will she find him in New Orleans? What dark being awaits Pandora's arrival? The vampire Lestat?!

I love this character Pandora..but

I just really wish it was as long as the vampire Armand or Lestat but ehh I feel like Pandora could have been so much more but I love this book and this series (and the Mayfair chronicles tho a little to pedo/incest but I can gloss over 😬) so much love for Anne Rice which I started reading at 12 yrs old after my mother was reading them but was lacking the knowledge I have now at 33 lol I really couldn’t understand as I do now and this series so far (just getting to merrick and rereading all in order) its beautifully done and visual descriptions, so inspiring as an artist.

Love this story of Love, History, Loss and once again ... HUMAN NEED.
Pandora pulls you in, not by force or invitation but by seduction and power.

Great Performance of a Good Story

Janet McTeer's performance as Pandora is spectacular. I would love to listen to her do more books from this series. (Or at least the unabridged version of this one). A talented reader makes a huge difference. I hope she continues making more audiobooks.

The story itself is good, we get a deep look at the history of the main character, a female vampire named Pandora. I personally would have liked to see a little more action for a vampire story, but it was still good overall.
