About this listen

Comic Lorna Landvik gives Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon a feminine perspective with her story about Patty Jane and Harriet Dobbin, two wacky Minnesota sisters. Patty Jane's downfall is to marry the gorgeous but irresponsible Thor Rolvaag. Before she can say "annulment," a baby is on the way and Thor is gone, leaving Patty to rely on sister Harriet. It would be Patty Jane's entrepreneurial spirit that moves her to establish a beauty shop, her House of Curl, which evolves into a support group and community workshop over three tumultuous decades. Gently humorous and peopled with eccentric characters, Patty Jane's House of Curl is a heartwarming, deeply satisfying experience.©1995 Lorna Landvik (P)16 9; 1996 HighBridge Company Entertainment & Celebrities Literary Fiction Sagas Women's Fiction Celebrity Witty Heartfelt

"Fun and funny, spiked with tragedy and sad times." (USA Today)
"Patty Jane's House of Curl has the emotional warmth of Lake Wobegon and the tender/tough female characters who populated Fried Green Tomatoes... A unique story." (St. Paul Pioneer Press)

Lorna Landvik reminds me of Fannie Flagg!

One of the best books I’ve read. I loved it. Love the middle west (Minnesota) culture the permeates it. Reminiscent of Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias. Can’t wait to read more of Lorna Landvik’s books.

Makes me want to get a permanent wave!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I had previously read this book and loved it so much that I decided to revisit it in audio format. Loved it just as much the second time around.

Hilarious, sad, all rolled into one

Seriously did NOT want this book to end; Lorna Landvik’s inflections changing with each character had me almost driving off the road from laughing so hard, and I wanted to cry so many times for all the amazing characters. A MUST listen-to!

Great story and great narrator.

Where does Patty Jane's House of Curl rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I thoroughly enjoyed the simple but engaging story of two sisters from their early twenties through the following twenty years falling in love and suffering personal tragedy and even though they are deeply flawed people and have times of losing one another, in the end they struggle through together and show that you don' have to have a perfect life to have a full life as long as you got your family.

Not a good listen

This was recommended by my friend who is an avid reader, as a light summer book. Perhapse the story is better when read. The narrator, while her voice is pleasant enough, has not mastered the art of telling a story aloud. I could not get a grasp on if parts were meant to be funny or serious. The character voices are wanting. Overall, the read of the book made it seem like one big joke. Save it for paperback.

Not the full book.

Performance was good. Pieces of the book were missing. Huge disappointment as this is one of my favorite books.
