Publisher's summary

Sometimes, Verity Long would like to forget she lives with the ghost of a 1920s gangster. But the reluctant housemates must once again work together when a dead detective blackmails Frankie into helping him solve a Great Gatsby-era cold case. Before she can say “bathtub gin”, Verity is dragged straight into a raging, otherworldly house party. Worse, every guest is hiding something.

Meanwhile, Ellis Wydell, Verity’s living, breathing boyfriend needs Verity’s help with a police case of his own. After a dead body is discovered near the pecan orchard, Verity gives her insights, thinking her job is done. But when mysterious pecan pies start arriving at her house, she wonders who might be thanking her...or stalking her.

Between hard-living ghosts and sugar-laden desserts, Verity has her work cut out for her. But will she uncover the secrets behind the pecan pies and dead guys? Or has she stumbled upon a recipe for disaster?

A warm and witty paranormal cozy mystery!

This should be a TV series!

I absolutely adore this series. I found it last year around Halloween and I’m happy to delve back into Sugarland again. Excellent writing, characters and narration. Tavia Gilbert is amazing at all the voices, especially Frankie. This was my favorite book yet, just keeps getting better.

(Spoilers) I loved the direction Beau’s character went in, both laugh out loud funny and concerning. I loathe Virginia Wydell but I think you’re supposed to lol. I’m a NYer and I can’t really relate to this abusive relationship. If Verity were from NY, she’d tear her cross right off Virginia’s neck or threaten to breakup with Ellis if he didn’t either get it back or stop speaking to his mother until she gave it back. But that’s part of what makes Verity so interesting and amazing. She is always willing to help the dead or the living, including those who do not deserve it.

I was braced for Beau’s gf to be the murder victim, not the murderess! Wow! Somehow i think she was the scariest of all the murderers in the series so far bc she seemed the most innocent! Her lack of remorse was truly chilling. loved Margery and she may be my fav ghost that Verity has met. The whole backdrop of the Astair estate was sooo captivating and the EJ twist was delightful and heartbreaking. The description of the tar closing in on Verity when she finds the briefcase is phenomenal.

I did wonder how old EJ was if she was born in 1916. Not sure what year Verity is supposed to exist in but it seems like EJ must have been close to 100. The intermingling of the ghost plane and real world is so cool, always written creatively and clearly. I loved Frankie’s sparring with Declerk and it was yet another impressive accent of Tavia’s. It’s crystal clear which character is speaking and she even sounds authentic as the male characters.

I highly recommend this book, especially for a Halloween read. I usually detest first person narration but I can overlook it for this series. I can’t wait to finish the series and I hope that more continue to release 👻

Looking forward to the next book. I’m addicted!

The books are fun and clean, without profanity and obnoxious over-rated sexual content. The narrator has a wonderful voice and makes the books even more fun.

fun and sleuthing

cozy-mystery, supernatural, suspense, ghosts, family-dynamics, pet, situational-humor, snarky

Flappers and gangsters and food trucks, oh my!
Sugarland Tennessee is supposed to be a sleepy Southern town, but it is really a home to all kinds of ghostly former residents. Verity has a connection with ghosts ever since she inadvertently messed up the remains of a local gangster who now reluctantly works with her on murder cases both new and historical. This installment has one of each, but we're not talking CSI here, more like Nick and Nora Charles with no money. Most of the humor is situational, but it's still pretty snarky. Fun book in a great series, don't miss it!
Tavia Gilbert has an interesting dramatic way of narrating.
