About this listen

Melanie West is getting her life back on track after a messy divorce when her grandmother, Liza Harris, asks her to join her in opening a bed-and-breakfast inn. Together, Liza and Melanie purchase a purportedly haunted mansion on the Oregon coast and jump right into clearing out the cobwebs. But while attempting to remove wallpaper in an upstairs bedroom, the new B&B owners stumble upon a very real skeleton in their closet. The police suspect the skeleton is that of the wife of the previous owner of the B&B, but no one in town seems to want to say much about her.

As the inn owners try to juggle renovations with their own amateur investigations, their grand opening looms closer and closer - and a friendly ghost in their walls starts playing tricks. But it all comes crashing to a halt when a new body is found stabbed to death on the beach below the inn - the victim chillingly close in resemblance to Melanie herself. It seems someone doesn't appreciate newcomers prying into the small town's past, and now it's up to Melanie and Liza to get to the bottom of these murders to save their business - and their lives.

Lame Impossible plot

Modern police departments will not insist on making business impossible for a case 50 years old. Even when the house is released, the police insisted on leaving a room closed. A skeleton was found and the cold case was over 40 years old. Seriously what sort of evidence were they preserving? A fresh scene would have been processed in 56 hours tops. That is the underpinning of the plot and it's not credible.

Mixed feelings about this one.

Story was fine. Narrator was terrible. Grandmother character was unbelievable. Will not listen to other books in series if by same Narrator.

Okay

I want to read the next in the series in hope that all the murder will ruin their business. Don't know if this means the characters or engaging, or so painfully stereotypical that I feel the need to see them in pain.

Great paranormal cozy mystery debut!

This is a new paranormal cozy mystery with likable interesting characters, probable romance and an intriguing mystery. Melanie and her grandmother Liza bought an old house and are fixing it up to open as a B&B, the Merry Ghost Inn. While ripping down old wallpaper, they find a skeleton which leads to problems for Melanie and Liza. The police suspect the skeleton is the wife of a former owner. The case is postponing their opening so they start poking around but the killer wants them stopped. The local police chief, Ben Carter helps them. Melanie’s ex is spotted around town. The characters are wonderful and the cozy is really good with just a little suspense to keep you reading. Very enjoyable! The audiobook is very well done.

A Nice Start to a Series

Somehow there were three free books in my Audible account that I could download and listen to. Thank you to whomever did this very nice and generous gesture. Dead and Breakfast was a nice start to this series. It was a basic cozy mystery with no extraordinary twist and turns. It’s a pleasant listening experience but not necessarily a great listening experience. It’s typical but I did enjoy listening to it. I was a bit hesitant to listening to it because I am not into ghost stories but the ghost part was minor, which was nice for me. I am not into creepy stories. I could empathize with Melanie regarding her ex-husband but at some point she needs to forgive him. I did like Melanie and Liza. They do have a good relationship but there must be some point where Liza needs to recognize Melanie as an adult not her “grandbaby” and respect her space. I knew who was the murderer as soon as the character was introduced. Most first books of a series are basic and subsequent books would build and develop the characters and story so I expect the series to get better with each book. I thought the narrator did a good job but it did seem like she was reading the story instead of telling it. Why does it seem that all British women sound old and crackly in all the Audible stories that I have heard so far? I will listen to the next book.
