About this listen

Blueberry Cove, Maine, is as small-town as small towns get. More than a little quirky, it has sheltered generations of families. But there's always room for a new face.

Fixing things has always been Alex McFarland's greatest gift and keenest pleasure. But with her own life thoroughly broken, she's signed on to renovate the dilapidated Pelican Point lighthouse, hoping to reconnect with herself. The last thing she expects is to find herself falling in love - with the glorious coastline, with age-old secrets and welcome-home smiles - and with rugged Logan McCrae, the man she just might be able to build new hopes on. DIY is so much better with two.

Setting: Blueberry Cove, Maine Contemporary to 2013
Genre: Romance
While his 3 younger sisters took off for college and professional lives, or to explore the world, Logan McCrae returned to his little hometown of Blueberry Cove to join the police force and become one of the youngest in the position. He feels an obligation, not just to the town, but also his family’s legacy. The McCraes were the light keepers at Pelican Point from when it was built in the 1700s to when it was decommissioned in the 1970s, at which time they bought it from the state. It, along with the keeper’s cottage and the larger family home from the 1800s are in need of repair. So, without his knowledge, Logan’s great uncle calls in McFarland & Sons, specialists in lighthouse restoration to get the job done.
Alex is the last McFarland in the company. In fact, the company has been reduced to an ancient truck, some good tools, and her knowledge and experience, since her father’s fatal accident. She desperately needs the job restoring this lighthouse. It will take 2 years, and she can use that time to decide what she wants to do with the rest of her life. Continue the business, or find something new?
Logan does not want to hire Alex. It isn’t that he doesn’t think she can do it (how refreshing not to have a sexist prick for the male protagonist, which is so often a device in novels in which the female has a conventionally masculine profession). Instead, it is a matter of money, and at the moment, restoring the house is more important. So she finagles her way into that business for a limited time (He’s allowing her to stay while she lines up another restoration job) while trying to convince him about the lighthouse. Logan and Alex are attracted to one another, but their respective baggage keeps getting in the way of their achieving happiness.
The writing is good, as far as grammar and usage go, but Ms Kauffman could have used a good editor. Probably could have cut it by a couple of hours. There were times I wanted to sit them down and discuss passivity. Too much description, too much internal monologue, too much ongoing anguish. Really, perhaps the author should have put a mental health clinic in town so her character could realistically deal with her grief. Most people have family and friends to help them through tragedy, but Alex is alone. It really isn’t realistic that she could handle the emotional demands of a heavy relationship. So yeah, there’s that.
I actually got this book after accidentally reading the first book in the Brides of Blueberry Cove Series. I thought it was a good idea to read the Bachelors of Blueberry Cove series first before returning to one that shoots off this one. I don’t know how many of these I can binge read without starting to hate them. We’ll see...

The narration by Lauren Fortgang is fairly good. She differentiates well between male and female characters, she does a passable up East accent when called for, and gives adequate accents to the two Irish characters. I generally enjoy her work.

Liked it. Didn't love it.

There is plenty to like about this listen but I didn't love it. The tree in the middle of town was a surprising appearance to this story type but the mystery remained. Perhaps future stories will ferret out more of that special.

The two main characters were lost in a boy-meets-girl-boy-loses-girl scenario that did not play well for too long. It was very much get over yourself already. Still, with Maine, the coast, and lighthouses as background, it was a pleasant enough listen.

A very enjoyable story

I really enjoy this story. The characters were well thought out and enjoyable. I don’t know about all the crying 😢 though. I’m not much of one and most the time for me it’s when I’m angry. So that part not so much. But the rest of the story was a enjoyable time.

Steamy...

This story was much steamier than I had anticipated. I listen to these books while I do other tasks because it keeps my mind occupied. This one, however, had me stopping and rewinding to hear the extra steamy parts again. It was nice to listen to a romance where the woman wasn’t a helpless damsel in distress awaiting rescue. It was a fun listen.

Pelican Point

I love the story line. The author had me laughing out loud and smiling several other times. I can just see the lighthouse the keeper's cottage and the shariff. I look forward to listening to other books by this author. Alex is a fantastic lady who knows her businedd.

Beautiful story

This book is up there with Virgin River and Angels Rest for me. I love this story and the elements with the lighthouse, past losses, the romance, etc. Loved it.

Narration is tough

I think I would’ve enjoyed this more with Amanda Ronconi or a different narrator. It is difficult for a female narrator to do a deep baritone voice but I also found some of the accents that I think were supposed to be from Maine? But we’re more like from Brooklyn, to be very distracting. I really want to listen to the rest of the series and then the next one but I’m not sure I can do another two books of the narrator :-( too bad because I was starting to like blueberry Cove.
