About this listen

In this much-needed audiobook, which is part self-help and part autobiography, award-winning correspondent Mariana Atencio digs into what makes each of us special and the ways in which we can become a force for good in a broken world.

As a bilingual correspondent for NBC News, Fusion TV, and Univision, Mariana holds a unique perspective - having immigrated from Venezuela to America as a young adult, having overcome challenges to graduate from Columbia University and eventually become a national news correspondent, and having seen firsthand the humanity that is ever so present in the midst of both adversity and opportunity.

Mariana’s story is the powerful, inspiring story of life in the United States as an immigrant. Yet it is at its core a human story. It is all of our stories, and it is a call to every man, woman, and child to unlock the magic of their potential and begin to thrive.

The media screens of today perpetuate stereotypes, but what would happen if instead of comparing ourselves and falling short, we compared ourselves and celebrated our uniqueness? What would happen if we believed in our worth and embraced what makes us different? And what if we truly saw those around us as neighbors and not merely adversaries to our particular group or station?

The days of doubt and division must end. It starts with authenticity, persistence, and understanding what truly makes you special.

Editor's Pick

An inspirational memoir
"Mariana Atencio first came to my attention during NBC’s coverage of the devastating earthquake that rocked Mexico in September 2017. I was surprised at how quickly she was able to interview victims in Spanish and then, live on-air, flawlessly translate to the television audience in English. She even does this in her first book, Perfectly You, narrated by Mariana herself in both English and Spanish. Throughout her story, Atencio focuses on the power of being yourself and embracing your Latinidad. The Venezuela native also details how she was able to make the transition to English-language media, getting over insecurities about both her accent and her sense of belonging. Mariana Atencio is a fearless reporter who knows the only way to get to the heart of the story is to be a part of it."

Súper Inspiring 🙂 Highly recommendable

Mariana Atencio is one of the millennial generation is top TV news talents, one of the only latinas of any generation to cross over from spanish-language to mainstream media, and now the proud author of her first book, which is excellent ... an instant classic, essential reading, esp. for any Latina looking to rise in the news business.

Inspirational

I’d recommend this book to any immigrant, child of an immigrant, and/or anyone interested in learning about the many hardships youthful immigrants must ensure on their way to success. Mariana speaks of the importance of focus, authenticity, open-mindedness, relentlessness, and risk-taking. I was nearly moved to tears when she described the racial/ethnic prejudices she and her husband have endured as well as the beauty of connecting with a supportive mentor in Maria Elena Salinas. I hope and pray this book reaches millions because her story is inspirational and may to encourage others to take chances in the face of great adversity in pursuit of a new American Dream. Kudos to Mariana.

(Memo to Audible: The recording became quite choppy in Chapter 7). Otherwise, everything about this including Mariana’s relatable accent are perfect.

Intrigued from beginning to end!

Mariana does an incredible job making the reader/listener envision and feel what she saw and felt. I was hooked from beginning to end. Mariana’s story is one full of life’s heartache, awareness of the abroad humanitarian crisis, but overall, a reminder that hope, faith, and love can guide us through anything. Mariana, thank you for being authentically and perfectly you and sharing your life with your audience.

Mixed feelings about this book

~6 hours of self-promotion. I am another Latin who migrated from Mexico and actually felt embarrassed with a few passages of this book. It also has a few entertaining chapters and very sad moments (like the papi passing one ). This is a story about a semi privileged relatively pretty venezuelan girl forced to migrate to USA. Kind of weird of initial struggle and barely legal methods to (stay) in the US. Weird because she studied in an Ivy League college, that’s supposed to open you many doors if you are really good, but struggled to find a job. ( so this is not the typical Latin immigrant story and most of the time there is this condescending tone ). Fired from work and close to stay illegally in the US. Loopholed the sister in. The one thing that I really disliked of the book is that some people might take it too seriously to be “perfectly them”. What I mean by this is that when you migrate to a different country you need to respect it and at least try to merge into the culture a bit. specially when it comes to respecting the law which is one of the top values of this country and at times it sounded like you were willing to break it and justifying illegal migration. I think that’s wrong, people who enter here suddenly feel entitled to many things, we are not we gained and while we should absolutely be proud about our heritage we should also go by the rules and general customs of this beautiful country.

Other than that congratulations on the book is entertaining .

Oh and the audio breaks frequently on some parts of the book you guys should fix that!
