About this listen

A true multigenerational story of how one family had and lost it all along the US-Mexican border.

Pietro La Greca Sr. was an intimidating Napolitano con man dubbed “Mexico’s real-life Don Corleone”. He ran Mexico’s biggest money-laundering scheme during the worst economic period in the country’s history. His was a world of fast cars, mansions on the water, and VIP treatment at Las Vegas casinos. His exploitation of Mexico’s financial free fall made him a wealthy man. But while he was running his criminal empire, his son, Pietro Jr., a.k.a. Picho, was learning his father’s tricks—if only to bring the man down.

An epic tale of greed, high-finance scams, drug cartels, and brazen corruption by the rich and powerful on both sides of the border, Pesos is as personal as it is lavish and fantastical. At its heart is Pietro La Greca Jr., who reveals a decades-long family struggle over the boundaries of loyalty, betrayal, and love, and his soul-crushing quest to free himself from the sins of his father.

We’ve noticed—and applaud—a trend in our members' preferences for history: Audible listeners want to hear about events of the past with both discipline and nuance. A sad but interesting story

I didn't finish this book the first time I played it. I don't know why that was because I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it this week. It kept my interest from beginning to end. The story demonstrated the sad and tragic life of one man who spent his entire life chasing the almighty dollar, to the detriment of everyone around him, especially his family.

Great Story

Great story! I was able to finish this in 3 days while working. the narrator sounds great too . having been to San Diego, Tijuana and Rosarito I was curious in the story and where it was taking place at. with the first tale of his father I was hooked already on how is this was going to turn out. Even though there are some scary elements for your safety or life, some of these stories are fascinating and funny. The kid in kindergarten wearing a suit for example . also interesting how you ended up from place to place and stories behind it. the mom son relationship is tearful and loving. thought so much of my mom and grandfather by the end of this book

Amazing story. Couldn’t put it down

As a son of a customs house broker I related so much to the story. The story was beautifully told. It’s become one of my favorite books. Which I’ve gifted to my father who is also a customs house broker in Mexico

Family

This was a fascinating story. It speaks to resiliency of a young man who had an abusive life and how he rose above it. The love he had for his mother and abuelo and vice versa was his saving grace. I loved the narrator’s voice.

I live in San Diego

I am happy to read another perspective about my home town. I lived during the events, in the book, and it was a eye opener about the Peso devaluation. I remember US citizens having money in TJ Banks in something called dollar accounts but they couldn't withdraw their money during the crisis.
