About this listen

Barrie works an indisputable magic on listeners of all ages in this classic tale of the boy who wouldn't grow up. As a baby, Peter Pan fell out of his carriage and was taken by fairies to Neverland. There, he can fly and is the champion of the Lost Boys and a friend to the fairy Tinker Bell. Revisiting England, Peter becomes involved with Wendy Darling and her younger brothers, all of whom accompany Peter to Neverland. The children have many adventures and vanquish the pirate Captain Hook. The Darlings eventually return home with the Lost Boys, leaving Peter Pan to his perpetual boyhood.

Since Peter Pan first appeared as a play in 1904, the boy hero has achieved mythological status in the English-speaking world. The story's emotional truths about youth, freedom, and responsibility continue to touch the heart and thrill the imagination.

James Matthew Barrie (1860 - 1937) was born in Scotland, the son of a weaver and the ninth of 10 children. His mother saw to it that he was educated, despite the family's low income. He studied at the University of Edinburgh and spent two years on the Nottingham Journal before settling in London as a freelance writer in 1885. His short stories, essays, and novels were well received, and he began to gain a fine reputation as a playwright. His most enduring work is Peter Pan, which is based on stories he made up for children in his neighborhood.

Classic book, that is much better than the Disney

This is an amazing book. I listened to this with my daughter numerous times. It's a way different story than what you are used to with Disney. I would listen to this if I didn't have kids, but it's so wonderful to listen to this with your child.

Good Book

Such a good book. Loved the different characters and their backstories. Especially the description of Smee. I wish the movies were more faithful to the book, but I also understand why they can't be.

Never grow up

This is the first time I have been through the classic story of Peter Pan. Such a good story!
This narration was a very good listen and the narrator did a wonderful job. He has a nice voice for narrating stories.

Total Delight

Most of us know the story of Peter Pan and I would have missed out listening to this delightful performance had I not heard the recommendation by a famous celebrity quite a while ago. I was looking for something that would be quick listening after having listened to a particularly long audiobook. I’m a youthful 78 and this truly is a story for all ages. Christopher Cazenove did a wonderful job.

Very good VA for a great classic

It's great to go back over these classic stories and hear how the characters were really portrayed before they were sanitized and homogenized for cartoon adaptations.

Classic Story

A well narrated, classic tale.
I've always known of the book, but never read it before. It's easy to see why this tale has stuck with so many

Great Narration

It’s been awhile since I read the book. I forgot how much more this story is for adults, especially parents, than it is for children. The narrator does a great job of balancing yelling and crowing with whispers as well as singing the pirate songs.

The most artistic reading, great for ESL listeners

English is not the first language for my daughters and me, so I was looking for a very clear and dramatic reading of this book. The intricate over-a-century-old language, and complex phrases with unique twist of Barry's humor may be difficult to grasp for a non-native speaker, but Christopher Casenove's voice and his talented dramatic representation of each character made this book not just approachable, but my kids' and mine favorite! I've listened for the examples of other actors' readings of this book, but chose Christopher Casenove's for his artistic approach to reading of the book, his clear pronunciation, and his mazing, voice, and I've got all I expected plus more. Christopher Casenove's artistic reading makes "Peter Pan" shine as a true masterpiece this book is!

Fun story, engaging narrator

Second time we have listened to Peter Pan- I don’t remember the word “ass” in it the first time... maybe it was a slightly different version? My 3, 5 and 7 year old weren’t phased by it but it did surprise me a bit. I’d listen to it again.

Excellent narration

Never have read this before - the narrator made the story very interesting. Now to watch the Disney Peter Pan cartoon to see if is as close to the book as I remember
