Publisher's summary

Blackstone Audiobooks presents, from the unabridged collection A.A. Milne's Pooh Classics, the 44 poems and verses from When We Were Very Young performed by Peter Dennis. This is the only reading of these delightful verses authorized by A.A. Milne's son, Christopher Robin.

The first of A.A. Milne's four world-famous books for children, When We Were Very Young introduced Christopher Robin to innumerable friends and has probably been read more widely than any other book of verse for children published in our time.

For sheer delightfulness, the children's rhymes of A.A. Milne are in a class by themselves, with their charm, humor, and understanding, to say nothing of their irresistible rhythms.

Critic reviews

"Peter's reading of A.A. Milne's verse and poetry is about you and me and that cognac-colored moment when a scent of memory sends us flying back through time to a place in youth where, for a perfect instant, nothing is wrong." (Los Angeles Times)

Charming

This is such a wonderful collection of poems. My children (7 and 3) listen to it on long car rides, and it always brings a smile. The narration is excellent.

Wonderful! worth many listens!

Nice to read, but better to listen. Narrator is just right. Especially good in small Increments, to more easily appreciate. :-)

When Pooh Was a Swan and Winnie Was Edward

This is the book written when Christopher Robin was only 2, when Pooh was the name of a swan and when the short, stout, honey-loving bear that later became probably Milne’s most famous creation was named Edward, or Teddy for short. The book is 45 poems written for children and this is the bestselling book that made Milne’s reputation as a children’s writer. The poems are written for children and show Milne’s ability to understand the imagination and thoughts of a child. However, they are not written as “speaking down” to them.

Most of the poems are written in the voice of a child about everyday topics. They have the creativity of a child for whom the simplest thing can become the basis of anything they can dream of to take them on adventures of discovery.

I enjoyed reading them, though certainly not every poem was of the same level. But, it made me wish there were a child nearby to share them with and watch their faces as their own imaginations take flight.

Poetry Pooh

Poetry Pooh is positively perfect!

It was a great break from the story format and helped us all to drift off to sleep. We listened as we wound down, the kids listened as they fell asleep and I continued to stay up and listen longer even without the kids.

Four year old's stamp of approval!

My four year old loved listening to these! She thought they were so silly and fun. It's not always easy to get kids her age engaged with audio books for very long, but this one was a winner! She listened to the whole thing in just two sittings.
