About this listen

Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) had a lifelong attraction to children's stories. By far the best known of all his music inspired by children's literature is Peter and the Wolf. Prokofiev was asked to write a piece that would introduce young audiences to the workings of an orchestra and its instruments. Peter and the Wolf showcases the composer's superb ability to bring a simple story to life, giving each character a recognizable motive and instrumental color.

The story is about the young boy Peter who, together with his friend the bird, manages to catch a hungry wolf who has come to his garden, looking for food and chasing all the animals, including a duck whom he manages to swallow. After the wolf has been caught with a lasso, hunters arrive, intending to shoot him. Instead, Peter proposes to bring him to the zoo, and the hunters, Peter, his grandfather, and the animals form a procession to deliver the wolf.

This is GREAT!

I remember listening to this in music class when I was little and I loved it so much. Now that I’ve found it again, I listen to all the time! I think it’s very calming at night.
Sophia Loren did a very good job, but I prefer the Disney version.

A Delightfully Nostalgic Listen

Professionally performed and narrated in a relaxing pace. Great for all ages as a musical introduction.

New favorite version of this children's classic

Sophia Loren does a great job narrating the story. I love how expressive her voice is throughout. This will be the version I listen to going forward.

The music sounds fine. When I listen to Peter and the Wolf I listen primarily to the performer, the orchestra is secondary since they all play the piece well.

It is the story I remember, no changes there. Poor duck.

Previous favorite versions were the Sean Connery reading and the Disney version read by Sterling Holloway (the original Winnie-the-Pooh).

narration volume

the volume for the narrator was a bit low so her words were difficult to understand

The best "Bedtime Story"

I love listening to Sophia Loren's telling of this classic children's tale. Her delivery is superb and makes me come back to this title time and again. Someday, I'll be awake for the ending... someday.

Sophia Loren, always charming.

Sophia does her always wonderful job in telling this story. Her narration adds perfectly to the story. I also grew up on the Disney version. I think this is close to its equal.

Great background listen!

I enjoyed the animation Peter and the Wolf and this is a pretty good alternative for auditory! I like that there is still narration thought the music so that I can see the visuals in my head or hear other sounds that can create the character and story more. I played this while drawing sketches of tomatoes and I think the music shows through!
