Publisher's summary

If you have an undeniable passion for photography, perhaps it's time to think about taking it to the next step. Chances are, if you're listening to this, you know that that next step is to make a business out of it!

When starting a photography business, it's important to note that while there are similarities (you have to have a product, and you need a business plan) things operate a little bit differently in artistic fields. That's why the majority of this book is going to focus on how to brand and market yourself successfully. First things first, though, you'll need to determine whether you are a fine art photography business or a commercial photography business. This determination is going to alter the way in which you choose to do your marketing.

Here is a preview of what you'll learn...

  • How to put together a solid operational business plan
  • Fine Art Photography Business vs. Commercial Photography Business
  • How to brand yourself successfully
  • How to market yourself successfully
  • And so much more!

Before you can get started marketing, you have to brand. And before you can brand, you have to understand whether you have a fine art or commercial type of photography. These are the key elements of the book, along with how to write a great business plan and how to stay relevant!

not quite photo 101, more like 50 and a half

most of the examples would take out of common beginning business techniques. Few to no real photo related instances were cited.

A++ AN ALL IN ONE PERFECT GUIDE

I really can't thank you enough for writing this book. It was short and to the point and is a perfect step by step guide. So perfect that it will be easy to go back and refresh on the information as needed. It like having a simple note book/cheat sheet in my pocket. Thank you.

A okay book, but needs more work!

It was an okay book but felt it landed a little short in the specifics of each topic. I would’ve liked to have seen a little more in-depth details of each topic instead of generalizations. For example the business plan part was very general and didn’t get into topics or specifics about identifying demographics or market segmentation. Also, the book skips over legality issues such as contracts and structure and formation of various different types of photography contracts and various intellectual property. As well as photography permits and Location legality issues that may arise in certain municipalities.

Outdated and not about photography

This book explains the basics of setting up a business, but has very little to do with photography in particular. The first chapters do talk about the types of photography businesses and has some hints for marketing them, but from what I've heard from photographers his advice will lead you to fail before you start. The chapters on business are also horribly outdated and you could find more and better information for free in blog posts today.

For what it's worth, I did enjoy his book on composition (having no previous knowledge), it's only this book in particular I didn't like.
