Publisher's summary

It happens to every parent. One day, you have a sweet son or daughter who loves to snuggle on the couch and who puts a smile on your face just by walking into the room. The next day, it's as if someone left the door open and let in an alien with a smart mouth and an attitude that, frankly, you could do without. Entering middle school is like stepping onto a different planet - for parent and child alike. It's a planet where peer pressure, social media, and hormones can wreak havoc in your child's life and in your relationship with him or her.

But these years don't have to create chaos in your family. Parenting expert and New York Times best-selling author Dr. Kevin Leman's time-tested principles will aid parents in helping their middle schooler not only survive but thrive during these turbulent years on Planet Middle School. He shows parents how to understand their child's rapidly expanding world, respond rather than react to emotional swings, tell their child about sex (before someone else tells them their version), create opportunities for their child to practice selflessness and gratitude, and ensure that their kid is one who loves home and family. Middle schoolers can be a weird, unpredictable species. But with a little help from Dr. Leman, parents will be able to ride out the interstellar storm with humor and confidence.

For Raising Daughters

N/A

Which character – as performed by Tom Parks – was your favorite?

N/A

What insight do you think you’ll apply from Planet Middle School?

Any additional comments?

The book is loaded with sound advice that is mirrored by lots of books in the same category. If you have daughters, I would definitely recommend. The advice is geared toward raising females. The book is still worth a read, but if you have boys, you may seek out another book that focuses on boys.

Really helped me get inside my middle schoolers thoughts and understand how I needed to change my approach between my elementary school child. It covers EVERYTHING.

Best I have seen about middle schooler

We have a middle schooler. This book is so informative, engaging and fun! Exceeded my expectations. It works too as we have implemented some of ideas learned! Our home is much more peaceful.

Decent Info, So-So on Advice

Informative about the whats, whys, and hows of middle schoolers and their world. However, I think all the important stuff could have been presented in a long article rather than an eight hour book. Also, the advice and on how to deal with things was often just examples of really unrealistic conversations to have with your kids. I can just see my kids' eyes roll if I started a conversation with, "You know, when your dad and I started dating...", or "When I had a teacher in Middle School that I didn't like...". I also felt like he talked a bit too much about his own family, and although I understand that sharing his own experience is a valid part of a book like this, I found his descriptions to be a bit self-congratulatory and condescending, and therefore off-putting. I did gain some valuable insight into the mind and motives of my alien middle schooler, though, so the book is worth a quick read or listen.
