Publisher's summary

The discovery of two teenagers ritualistically murdered in a secluded Austin park outrages a nation already on the brink of tearing itself apart. The victims are the latest in an epidemic of deaths linked to a mysterious, underground virtual game known only as Play Dead.

The forensic evidence soon points to Jamie Hamilton, a brilliant yet naive young man on the autism spectrum. But Angie Channing, a world-renowned true crime writer, isn't so sure. Could such a seemingly innocent person be capable of clinical brutality? Why the rush to silence him? What secrets are hidden in the world of Play Dead that are worth killing for? What if Jamie is the key to something far more sinister?

Angie quickly finds herself in a relentless game of cat and mouse that threatens far more than just her sanity or her life. How far will she go to uncover the shocking truth?

Enter a psychological thriller ripped from tomorrow's headlines that will haunt you until the last line. It is said that nothing is as it seems in the halls of power and that some truths are far too dangerous for the common man. Until now.

Mind Trip!

Challenges the perception of everyday reality. Deeper meaning woven throughout, in its entirety it is a masterpiece.

Mind blowing! Not what I expected!

Ted Dekker has the most creative and thought provoking imagination that I've had the pleasure to read from in a long time. Great page turner, I didn't want to stop reading or listening! I have the book in hardback but am a slow, dyslexic reader and wasn't able to read it fast enough so I bought the audible edition😅 The narrator did a splendid job while reading and playing parts of the characters! Some books aren't as fun to listen to just because of the narrator, but not this one. Ted Dekker picked well!

Any book that mentions Chuy’s automatically gets 5 stars!

Okay, first, it’s pretty cool to listen to a book set in your own backyard. The familiarity with the geographical locations and highways made it relatable.

Second, Chuy’s. Nuff said.

The book itself was so interesting. You have to really be paying attention to be able to follow it. Even then, Dekker’s writing is always so deep with dual messages that I find myself really trying to decipher what he’s trying to tell me.

Finally, the narrator does a great job. I will say his local accent varied between Texas and Georgia, so that was a little distracting in those parts. But maybe those characters moved from Georgia. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Olson sounded like colonel Sanders. 😳

Overall, recommend.

No spoilers

Good story, interesting premise……BUT….the narration was atrocious!!!! I came very close to returning the book solely based on the narration. Don’t get me wrong, the narrator’s voice was excellent when he was narrating—the problem came when he ‘got into character’…each voice was a caricature…slow sleepy stupid supposedly southern…very off-putting regardless of where the book was set, but the setting is Austin Texas and I don’t think the narrator has ever spoken to someone from Texas, let alone Austin…he had ONE job…sigh…

Ehh it was ok

Not as thrilling as I’ve come to expect from Dekker. Not a great ending (too simple yet with odd jumps in logic). Good performance by the reader

EXCELLENT!

Another Ted Dekker page-turner. I couldn’t put it down (or turn it off - I listened to the Audible version). Toward the end I got a little nervous thinking, “Seriously? THIS is how it’s gonna end?!” But, trust me, hang in there, the ending really is good.

I think I remember the author saying on Facebook that this story didn’t have any deep hidden lessons in it. He was mistaken. There are some very enlightening and convicting truths woven into this fictional story, in true Ted Dekker style - as it should be.

The performance was great, but the Audible recording itself skipped or repeated in several places throughout. But the story was good enough that I quickly got over it.

Great story! Thanx, Ted. Can’t wait for the next one!
