Publisher's summary
Billions of lives are at stake as a unique pair uncovers the ties between a bizarre homicide and an undeclared multi-planetary war! In this first installment of The Connectorate Series, Hughes leads us through a thought-provoking, vastly evolved society where people in power are "fully connected" to a sentient quantum network.
Peter O'Neil, a veteran Unlawful Intent Investigator, is assigned to the initial homicide report. His typical work involves the more mundane aspects of crime prevention in a culture where direct-to-brain interfacing provides a reliable snapshot of a person's future intent. As Pete learns the circumstances of the crime, everything starts pointing to the use of a remote avatar—a connection the network shouldn't have allowed. Then, as his unsolicited partner from the intelligence service arrives, new possibilities arise that point to a broader conflict. Pete's world gets turned upside down as he struggles to choose between his government's human intelligence agency or the network he's always trusted.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. Little do they know that colony will become permanent–and the last stand of the human race. Because, without warning, every single person left on Earth simply...vanishes. Adam is not having a good day. First, he finds out his very long-time boyfriend has been having an affair. Then, his dramatic exit becomes a little too dramatic when he ends up dead. To top it off, he finds out that the afterlife isn't at all what he expected (he has no desire to learn to play the harp, thank you very much). Fortunately for him, some afterlife bureaucratic screw-up ends him up with the most smoking-hot demon he's ever seen, and he decides he's keeping him. Maybe the afterlife won't be so bad after all.

I’m the first one to tell you I have issues. Trust issues. Family issues. Probably a few others I haven’t discovered yet. Which is why I prefer to keep my life as simple and uncomplicated as possible. Until him. Blake McAdams barrels into my life and refuses to leave. He’s relentlessly optimistic, sexy as hell, annoyingly persistent, and…wants to be friends? Because…he thinks I’m interesting? Yeah, I’ll pass. Thanks. Only, somehow, we end up doing just that.

What's a superhero to do when his own family sees his powers as unimpressive and he's fifth in line for the throne? Set my sights on getting space married to a hot alien, of course! For science. Ziggy Andromeda is a skinsuit-stealing mercenary who's so far out of my league, he might as well be in another galaxy, but there's nothing I love more than a challenge. And his spaceship has only one bed! Unfortunately, a home planet conspiracy is threatening our besties-with-benefits situationship, along with my dream of putting a Saturn-sized ring on it and locking Ziggy down for good. Rude.

Project Incarnate is a new and original view of a distant future
Bern Hughes is my favorite new author. This is my second time through Project Incarnate and it was even better the second time. So many details of the story that you think about differently on a second read through. Can't wait for book two!
