Publisher's summary

Amaryllis Coltraine may have recently transferred to the New York City police force from Atlanta, but she's been a cop long enough to know how to defend herself against an assailant. When she's taken down just steps away from her apartment, killed with her own weapon, for Eve the victim isn't just "one of us."

Dallas's friend, Chief Medical Examiner Morris, had started a serious relationship with Coltraine, and from all accounts the two were headed for a happy future together. But someone has put an end to all that. After breaking the news to Morris, Eve starts questioning everyone, including Coltraine's squad, informants, and neighbors, while Eve's husband, Roarke, digs into computer data on the dead woman's life back in Atlanta. To their shock, they discover a connection between this case and their own painful, shadowy pasts.

The truth will need to be uncovered one layer at a time, starting with the box that arrives at Cop Central addressed to Eve, containing Coltraine's guns, badge, and a note from her killer: "You can have them back. Maybe someday soon, I'll be sending yours to somebody else." But Eve Dallas doesn't take too kindly to personal threats, and she is going to break this case, whatever it takes. And that's a promise.

Great story

I love the continuation of the story line in these novels. I’ve read all in order and this one is a
re-read through my audible books. If I gave any negative input it would be with Dallas I know she is gifted at her job and that is a strong part of the story line. But, by now, I have to be honest and say her way of looking at life and her self centered way is getting hard to hear. I find her to be clueless and almost so classless I can hardly say I even like her. It passed cute and acceptable and has moved on to self centered and with lack of maturity She doesn’t learn from the strong group of friends she has remains socially and personally immature. I’m finding her cute?? Quirks ??? Make her hard to like. But I must be one of few because her friends and especially her husband find her quirks cute and appealing I find her clueless and sometimes down right stupid.

Heart Wrenching and Bittersweet..

This book pulled at me hard. Eve and Morris' relationship has become close and trusting. It tore at me when Eve had to deliver such news to her friend, their relationship having grown with each book.
But Morris is part of the family now and the wagons have circled, even as his patient and methodical mind begins the arduous climb to acceptence.
I do hope in time that the depths of "Morris" and his character are plumbed much more and that his part in this series finds more of what he only briefly touched and began to believe in.

In the end, you can only worry that his brief encounter with the opening bars of love, will find him again. He seems to me to be very complex with a deep warmth inside him, not often found in others.
A warmth just waiting..
Opal.

Spotlighting Medical Examiner Morris

This was a good story line that brought more of ME Morris to the surface. I think I would have liked more about a life outside of the morgue for him though. Now the "dead" Doctor is dead inside, appropriate but sad. On the other hand, this showed more dynamics for all of the characters relating more with Eve and Roark.

I love her books

I love her books I just wish she could quit making Eve a heartless person. I wish Eve could love her fiends and not hate being with them and also I wish she could let Eve love Mavis' baby.

another team member gets someone they love taken.

What did you love best about Promises in Death?

I like when Eve has her dreams with the dead. It is always a harder book to read when it is one of the team members loved ones.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Promises in Death?

Eve dreaming and talking to Amarylis.

What about Susan Ericksen’s performance did you like?

As always, spectacular.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would love to hear these books all the way through but I like to pace myself, I like that I am starting with book one reading them in order. I like to savor them and can't wait for the next but I just will hate it when I have to wait for the next to come out.

Promises in Death

I love all of the In Death. I loved this one also. The one thing I didn't like was Peabody's voice. I don't remember her voice sounding like this from other books I have listened to. Other than that I really liked the book.
